BTDT moms - gassy/fussy 1 mth old

so my son is 1 month today and for about 2 weeks he has been getting very gassy and fussy. We have had 2 formula changes (started on Similac Advanced, changed to Similac Sensitive and now on Good Start Soy). We use the mylicon with every feedings. Have been giving him 2 oz of chamomile tea w/ 3/4 tsp of brown sugar (suggested by my doc) once a day for 2 weeks and started the gripe water 2 days ago. I even did the "old school" method of sticking the tip of a Vaselined thermometer in his tush.

Is there anything else I can do? I feel so bad for the little guy. He is pooping every day though.

keep him upright for at least 20 minutes after eating - i try to do 30.

burp him within an inch of his life!

the formula changes can also be doing some damage - so try to stick with one....and not change. i believe it can take up to a week to see results!

Mason was very gassy. We did the Milycon drops with every feeding. Since he wasn't projectile the Ped said to wait on changing formula b/c they're system is still so immature. You have to give it time. Try to burp every ounce or so and keep him up for a bit. It'll get better...

we changed the formula at the pedi's suggestion/urging.

we may try different bottles. the dr. brown's have too many parts for me. i dont have a dishwasher so its not realistic for us. i may try the playtex ventaires.

Re: BTDT moms - gassy/fussy 1 mth old

All of the above.

Give it time. Their digestive systems are so brand new, it takes some time for them to iron themselves out.

We're going on 3.5 months here and DD is still having gas issues Chat Icon But I know eventually she'll grow out of it like DD#1 did.

Hang in there Chat Icon Chat Icon

Try belly massages. What works the best for DD is rolling her gently over our knee for a minute or two then gently pushing her knees up into her chest.

Works like magic.

I also give DD Colic Ease along with mylicon and Mylanta (as our ped suggested)

DS had bad gas too. It was horrible. I felt so bad for him. We started with similac advance, went to sensitive, then to isomil - he was allergic to that so we had to use alimentium for a week and then tried the sensative again but this time the ready to feed and it worked. Each formula change you should do for at least a week in order to notice a difference. We also changed bottles. We were using drop ins but switched to born free (because i had gotten free samples) I had dr. browns with my son and the born free seem easier to clean - I hand wash them all.

Are you using the powder or the ready to feed??? I bought the similac sensitive powder because it was cheaper and Nicky got gas again.

So, first try a bottle change
then try to use the ready to feed
then, try a formula change

I got these little info cards from similac and they had these suggestions too. Good luck.

Re: BTDT moms - gassy/fussy 1 mth old

DD had bad gas too and was REALLY fussy and finally the doc told us colicky too. She is 4 months now and I think her digestive has/ is starting to figure itself out. We did try most of the above- formula switches (even had her tested for milk allergy), mylecon, gripe, dr. brown's, prop mattress up, etc etc etc. I think it's very common to be so gassy and like many others said just give it time. Some babies I think are more sensitive to it and digestive in general. It can't hurt to try a few different things though as suggested above- I know for some they have been great solutions! Re: BTDT moms - gassy/fussy 1 mth old

I love Gentlease and recommend it to all of my moms for fussy/gassy baby. The benefit is that it is reduced lactose with partially hydrolyzed proteins. Most babies at that age have difficulty tolerating full lactose loads b/c of immature guts, but you don't want to eliminate lactose from the diet b/c you want lactase to continue working as well as keep calcium absorption high. The partially hydrolyzed proteins help with digestion and make it easier on their tummies.

This is my favorite formula out there.

As far as bottles, I liked Dr Browns and Playtex drop ins.

Also, as a dietitian I have never heard of giving a baby chamomile tea and brown sugar...what is the reasoning behind that...just for my own knowledge

I was having the same problem.
My ped suggested giving water with Karo syrup (1 tsp per 2 oz of water).
A family remedy is boiling water and steeping chamomile tea with 1 tsp. fennel seed.

Is the baby having trouble pooping? My DD was and we gave her soemthing called Fletcher's its a laxative for babies.

Re: BTDT moms - gassy/fussy 1 mth old

My son was also gassy/colicky. We found the key was to be consistent, try to pick a formula and stick with it. We used gripe water (and still do) with every bottle.

I also gave him chamomile tea. My ped suggested it might help him sleep. I still give him some in his bottle before bedtime.

Although I never used them, my ped also suggested biogaia probiotics.

If all else fails, patience is the best remedy. By 3-4 months you'll see a big change.

this is the key, really. I tried EVERYTHING with my gassy/collicky first daughter. And nothing worked. It really was just a question of time.
