Re: Do you tip...

garbage men - no... they always leave crap all over my driveway (and our garbage pick is not free either!)

mailman - they are actually not allowed to accept cash gifts, it's against postal policy.

Re: Do you tip...

i just posted a Q about mail carrier gifts on the NFR forum.
i usually give my mailman $20, but i keep reading that they arent allowed to except cash gifts.
i think i will still give it to him though - he is so great.

i never tip my garbage ppl though.

Mail, milk delivery, cleaning lady, hairdresser.

Here in CO the garbage men don't even get off the truck. It's all done with this claw thing. So no tip from me.

Just as an FYI, if they are caught accepting cash gifts, it is grounds for termination.

i had given gift cards and this yr didn't have time to get one so I put cash in his card.

I tip my cleaning girls, 1/2 of my bill. Not sure if that's enough. And my dry cleaning people $50. Our bill a week is about $80, plus they pickup and drop off for us. So I really appreciate them.

I still give to my mailman, he can open the envelope put it in his wallet and throw out the envelope. No one will be the wiser, we have always tipped our mailman.

ETA: we tip $25

bc they trek through horrid weather, word hard all year long, carry large packages sometimes, and its just a little way to say thank you.

I dont base whether I show someone appreciation for what they do, and the service they provide me EVERY day on what their salary/benefits are. I do it bc its the kind thing to do and it never hurts to show someone some appreciation and to give them a token of my thanks, regardless of their pay.

Re: Do you tip...

We do not tip anyone... personally my garbage men make twice my salary and we have a different mail man every week... No one tips me so unless the person survives on tips (i.e. waitress) then we do not tip

More or less the same holds true for us.

Additionally, we pay for garbage pickup and they use one of the claws to pick up the can, so they are really only driving the truck.

I am not living in NY at the moment, but I am from NY. I only tip servers or others that have a lower salary for that reason.

IMO, I think tipping has got way out of hand in the past few years.

Re: Do you tip...

Each one of our garbage men gets $20 cash. I gave the mail lady a $20 gift card becase I read somewhere that they are not allowed to accept cash. Now, I know a gift card is the same thing but I felt like she would get in less trouble if she got caught. Silly, I know...Chat Icon

ETA: I dont think our grabage men or my mail carrier get paid THAT well. I mean, I know they're good middle class jobs with benefits but at this time of year, I like to recognize anyone who provides me and my family with a service that I appreciate. I also buy the security people at my office some goodies, throw some $$ to gas station attendants, etc.

Re: Do you tip...

My dad always tipped the garbage men...even way back when, when we had to pay for the service. But my dad wouldnt just give them a Christmas tip, he would give it to them during the year also, when ever we had work done and there was a ton of garbage to be picked up. Im sure my dad did have to, but he did it to show his appriciatation for a job well done by someone that has a $hitty job....no pun intended!! Chat Icon I guess thats why i dont think anything wrong about giving them a tip..

Our garbage men are great! Chat Icon

ETS: we give them $50 for the 2 of them

ITA with you. Just asked because my mom lives in another state and they don't tip like here in NY. It has gotten ridiculous.

I only tip servers etc. when I am in NY. Since I am out of the US, I rarely even tip servers (only at nice restaurants).
