I give the mail man a gift because he does a good job and I have gotten to know him from chatting over the years. I give him a gift card as a thank you for Christmas.
I don't know the garbage men at all, I think I have different ones every week... so no I don't give them anything.

I give the mailman $20. He always makes sure my packages are out of the rain and congratulated us on the birth of our son the other day. He is a nice guy.
I don't see my garbage men and I would never just leave money on the pail (someone would steal it) so they don't get anything.

$20 each for garbage men and $20 for the mail carrier.
Personally I wouldn't want to do their job, especially the garbage guys. They do a great job, take everything I could ever put out there and even came by a second time on occasion to get something I put too far back for them to pick up.
Our garbage pick up is not free at all. Our taxes pay for garbage pick up. I just feel that these guys go over and above and do their job well. I want them to keep picking up all of my crap so I tip them. It's totally worth it. It makes them feel appreciated and frankly it makes me feel good to do something nice for someone.
My mail carrier always puts a rubber band around my mail and it makes it easier for me to do a drive by and get my mail with one hand. My mailbox is at the end of my driveway. He gets a little something too. It may be against the rules to tip him with cash but he has always taken it.
