I live in Nassau and moving to Suffolk I never dealt with cesspools and now the home we bought has one , any tips ? I am so used to flushing everything and doing numerous washes now i hear we have to be careful of water usage .. any thoughts?

Re: Cesspools
I was in the same boat as you when I bought my house. But I can tell you, I've had 9 people living in my house (including family staying with me and in my basement) and running 2 washers and 2 dishwashers and have not yet had a problem. I don't know if it is because it was new construction so the cesspools were empty when I bought or what. If you're worried, you can have a drywell put in to collect the water from your washing machine. The dishwasher doesn't really use that much water (so I've been told). We're not really that careful about what we flush either, except that I do not allow any kind of "flushable" wipes. A plumber once told me that "flushable" only means that the material will breakdown in the sewer system (or cesspool I imagine) but it doesn't mean it can't get stuck in the pipes on the way out of your house (at that time I lived in a house with public sewers). I also tell all women they can not flush tampons. I do have a garbage disposal in my kitchen although I've been told that it is not really recommended for homes with cesspools. I don't dump all the food waste in the disposal. I clear the plates into the garbage and just use the disposal for the residual stuff that would ordinarly get collected in the "basket" in the bottom of the sink. I've also been told not to start having them emptied unless you're having a problem. Not sure why, something about the walls collapsing or something I think.
That's about all I know about cesspools. Hope some of it helps you.

i pretty much could have typed the same response... well, except for the 9 people living in one house lol
we moved into our house june 08 and we were told the cesspool hadnt been "cleaned" in about 3 years... we have yet to have an issue *knock on wood* i dont really pay attention to what or the amount of stuff i flush (of course, i never flush tampons) and i do laundry regularly
the only other thing i can say about cesspools is that if you want to build a pool or pond or something you need to be careful that you dont dig up the ground where the cesspool is... that could be bad haha

Re: Cesspools
Before our construction, we had our old cesspool for almost 14 years. Never touched it, never emptied it. We never worried about the dishwasher or washing machine.
Our new cesspool is designed to handle up to 28 people living in the house, so I think we're OK... (building codes.... )
