the deadbeat former owners of our house..

We bought our house in Feb of '08 - over a year and a half ago.

We still get mail for the former owners at our house - not just junk mail, but past due bills. I'd say that we get one probably every month or two.

In the first few months after we moved in, i was contacting the post office regularly to have them stop delivering for these people. The former owners had moved only two blocks away from us, so every once in a while, i'd drop off the mail to them and always ask them politely to please make a point to change their address with everyone. They assured me that they would, and apologized for the inconvenience.

However, i'd say after a year, we stopped writing forwarding addresses on the mail, and started opening it when we realized that it was reoccurring bills. We didn't want those businesses to have our address still associated with the former owners anymore and wanted them to know of their new addresses. Clearly the former owners weren't paying the bills, or bothering to update with the new address.

Fast forward to today.. i came home and there was a bill from a local hospital's ER center. I opened it because i had been to this same ER myself earlier this summer and thought it was for me.
Turns out its a bill for a visit that took place last month. The woman STILL is giving out our address as hers!!

What do you think i should do? On the one hand, i want to go over to their house and ask them in person (again) to change the address so nothing comes to our house.
On the other hand.. if i do that, then she knows that we've opened her mail in the past. And i don't want to get into that with her.
It wasn't exactly legal of us to do that, but I felt it was the only way that i'd be sure that all the companies with past due bills would get the new address and stop sending stuff to us!
These people were not in the greatest financial shape, so I have a feeling they've not been very eager to keep their info updated with people looking for money.

any suggestions?

Write "Return to sender, no longer at address" on it and put it back in the mail. It's not your problem. Let the sender figure it out.

I wouldn't open any more mail that isn't address to you or current occupent. Isn't that illegal?

in all honesty I have no idea other then sending the mail back with return to sender.

When I go to the hospital, if I have been there before, they don't ask my for my address, just ask if its changed. she may have not realized she never updated them. -I'm totally not defending her in anyway, its still not an accpetable situation

Honestly, if there wasn't the previous shady history with them, i'd give anyone the benefit of the doubt and totally think this was what happened. But knowing everything i do about them.. i think she purposely didn't update the address so she wouldn't get bill (which in her mind, puts it off for a while)

it's very frustrating for us.. we want nothing to do with these people anymore!

That's the thing.. i have their new address. And i want the people who are sending the bills to know it so they stop sending bills to us, and send it to the right one.
I just don't trust that the former owners would bother to update the addresses once they get the bills i've forwarded - so we'll continue to get these outstanding bills sent to our house.

I agree completely. Return to sender!!! I do this for the previous owners mail at our house too. It drives me nuts, but that is the right thing to do. I even received christmas cards last year (that was our 2nd christmas in that house).Chat Icon

Re: the deadbeat former owners of our house..

Our former tenant did that. Still does. I have contacted the post office. I did not say that he did not forward his address. We have collectors still calling us and using our mailing address.

BUT I did is told the post office that this person was doing mail fraud. Using an address that was not his and for over 3 years now.

I would use the ER mail and claim that you opened it by mistake since you also went to the ER. You cannot say that you opened the mail. It's completely illegal. Then say that while it was a mistake for you to open it since you thought it was YOUR bill, you realize that those people are purposely misleading collectors/people. They do not live at this address. Give them the new address they live at and make a formal complaint. They will give you a complaint number.

hmmm.... well, it would force these businesses to track these people down...
go to the post office and tell them what's going on and have them stop the mail

I agree, you can fill out a change of address right online with the post office

Online Change of Address

I think it's so rude that there is still things being sent to your house. Especially after you have spoken with her !!

Good Luck !!

I would NOT fill this out for someone else... this too is illegal...

"The person who prepares this form states that he or she is the person, executor, guardian, authorized officer, or agent of the person for whom mail would be forwarded under this order. Anyone submitting false or inaccurate information on this form is subject to punishment by fine or imprisonment or both under Sections 2, 1001, 1702 and 1708 of Title 18, United States Code. "

I would stop opening the mail and just go to the post office and see what they can do or continue to keep returning it. It sucks, but so does you getting in trouble or a fine for doing illegal things.

Yes I definitely wouldn't do this. Very illegal.

I also wouldn't give anybody their forwarding address. If the sellers found out you gave out their personal info, they could be crazy enough to come after you with a civil suit.

that's exactly what i was thinking!!! considering they already know where you live! either throw the mail away or write return to sender. there isn't anything more you can do.

very good point.. hmmm
yeah, we know we shouldn't have opened their mail, and so far, they have no idea that we have.
I think from now on we'll write RTS, not at this address on everything and leave it up to the post office to sort out

thanks!

Re: the deadbeat former owners of our house..

i used to write

"Nobody lives here by this name, RETURN TO SENDER"

that gives the sender the clue that they aren't living there anymore.

i have to agree with hospitals. i moved august 4 and JUST TODAY remembered to update my GHI (healthcare) people.

Re: the deadbeat former owners of our house..

i would just right return to sender. Believe me once a bill goes to collections they have ways to find these people. The companies will be able to search all kinds of records and be able to find them.

I know its annoying to keep getting it but if you keep writing return to sender or no longer at this address the PO will start to send it back with out you even getting it.

Re: the deadbeat former owners of our house..

We did RTS for 2 years. Nobody cared.

The only way we were able to stop it is to claim the mail fraud with the post office. They put a claim officially in their system and his mail was stopped directly from the post office so it would not be distributed to us.

We used to put a bundle for the mailman to pick up with RTS. Nothing happened! We had about 20 pieces of mail per week minimum.

Once the mail fraud claim was done. It stopped! The post office took care of the RTS for us.

Re: the deadbeat former owners of our house..

i was about to say do the mail fraud. ONLY because if these people are avoiding paying bills and one point it could be a warrant for their arrest out and guess who's door they are going to knock on?

I dont think that means she is still giving out your address. She may have been a patient at that hospital before and may have just not thought to update her info.

You are not legally allowed to open her mail so I probably would not acknowledge that you opened it. I would just keep sending all bills back. Trust me, the bill collectors WILL find them for sure.

You mean OP should fill it out for the previous owner? She can't do that, you have to provide ID I believe.

Well said, just keep sending things back or even go to her house once again. I would also speak to the post office and see what they recommend in this situation.
