That's great that they're suggesting areas to you, but they're not ultimately paying your mortgage, so they should really not be dictating much. And if you're listening to them because you're in need of help with a down payment, then maybe you need to wait to buy a house until you can afford the down payment yourself. The last thing I would ever want is my family dictating where I should be looking for a house. I know everyone's situation is different and we would have gotten help from my parents buying a house if we had needed it, but they never would have tried to push us in a direction of where to live. If you can't get what you want in that area, guess what? Time to look elsewhere!

We started our search there as well and found it is definitely an unrealistic price range in those areas. Not without dumping another several thousand on renovations.
I suggest expanding your search to the South Shore, you get quite a bit more for your $ but are still in that vicinity. Expanding East wold work in opening your options in that price range as well. We headed South and are so happy we did!
Good Luck!

to find a house with a good size yard and in move-in condition in great neck, manhasset, and port washington for under 700k?
my ILs are helping us out with some down payment but they want us to stay close to queens. i know i'm being a spoiled brat about this but i really feel like we're being tie down to certain areas and i want a bigger yard! i don't want to pay 700k for a house but feels like i'm living in an apartment.
vent over!
That is the problem with accepting other people's money, they get a say in where you look.
