Scary evening with DS - anything I should be concerned about now? Choking related

This evening was one of my scariest ever as a Mommy. DS was eating apples - little bite size pieces which he has done A MILLION MILLION times for months and months and months. I was cutting more for him and next thing I knew he was gagging and tryting to throw up but he couldn't. The next few minutes were awful. I grabbed him out of the seat and hit his back a few times but nothing - he kept trying to throw up - he was wimpering and not breathing well and he was turning colors - finally he stopped and started to cry but he kept gagging and throwing up but only phlem came up (sorry for the tmi). Then, I calmed him down and he was completely normal for the rest of the night (this happened at around 6:00). Needless to say it was a long evening our shedule was totally thrown off and he only went to bed about 30 minutes ago.

Sorry if this sounds rambling - it really is all a blur - I still cannot imagine what happened - I am thinking he was choking on the apple but, not even sure, maybe he bit his tongue and something went down the wrong pipe?

I took infant CPR but realized tonight I am totally unprepared for him as a toddler - I knew to hit his back and where to press on his stomach but it was SOOOO long ago I was really afraid to do it b/c I was afraid to hurt him. Needless to say I will be taking a child cpr class ASAP.

Anyway, my question is this (thank you if you have made it this far) is there anything that could happen now? Should I take him to see the ped tomorrow? Right after it happened he was breathing a bit funny - sounded like he was congested in his chest but, it went away completely for the rest of the night so I am thinking it was from all the crying and hysterics (and he was just getting over a little cold earlier this week). But, is it possible he aspirated something? Should I be watching him close tonight? Take him in tomorrow?

Something like this happened to me about 2 months ago. It is so scary.

How is he sleeping now? How is his breathing?

If he is sleeping and breathing normally, I think he is fine, but if my gut feeling felt like something wasn't right, I would sleep in his room (I know, I am nutty, I have done this before, the first time he was sick at 7 months I was sleeping in his room on the blow up mattress) and call the ped in the morning.

I would take him to the ped. If he DID aspirate, even a small piece, it can be seen on a chest x-ray. There is no way to break down food if it is in an airway.

Adelphi University did a CPR class with the American Red Cross about 2-3 weeks ago. They are trying to put together a CPR certification class if you are interested you can contact the institute for parenting there and see if it going thru.

They showed us in the class CPR for infant and toddlers and adults. They did say if the food doesn't come out you should go to the doctor b.c it could have gone down either pipe. I would call the ped and ask them if they want to check him out just to be safe.
