Hosta Question

Our Hostas are coming in really nicely right now. But last year they were bitten up. I'm told that it is slugs. Chat Icon So how do you keep your hostas looking nice and not all full of holes? Chat Icon

Re: Hosta Question

My DH bought a spray or powder at Home Depot last year, I don't remember the name but I'm sure you can go ask

Re: Hosta Question

My neighbor told me to put beer in a bowl. This will keep them away

Re: Hosta Question

I posted about this the other day! I use slug pellets (sprinkled around religiously) and I bought some gel that goes around your plants. I don't know if the beer trick works (imo) but the organic slug killers seem okay so far. Its been rainy today and my hostas seem okay. I am tending to them like babies!

Re: Hosta Question

Unfortunately, there's no perfect solution. I found this last year with a lot of different methods:

Organic slug control

I've used the pellets too but you have to reapply after rain and it can get pricey if you have a lot of plants.

Last year I just dealt with it but this year, I'm going to try out the coffee grounds idea. I have a ton of it, we make a pot every day. It can change the pH of the soil though, so I will keep an eye on that too for the Hosta and ferns I have in shade.

I also have a big bag and a half of these:

Which are seeds from the Sweet Gum tree my neighbor has around the block. I plan on putting them just around the base of some of my plants, among the mulch, to deter bunnies, squirrels and slugs.

I think I might try the coffee myself. Thanks for the link.

I can't see the picture you or other link you put up though. What is it?

I changed it to a link to the picture. It's a seed ball from the Sweet Gum tree. It's pointy and doesn't feel very nice when you touch the points. They already dropped though, I think in January so unless you know someone who hasn't raked them up, I think that ship has sailed. Chat Icon
