King family draws fees from DC memorial project

WASHINGTON – The family of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. has charged the foundation building a monument to the civil rights leader on the National Mall about $800,000 for the use of his words and image — an arrangement one leading scholar says King would have found offensive.

personally, I agree with the scholar. and I also think it's disgusting. it's not like anyone is looking to profit by building this memorial. it's a tibute to MLK and he is being honored with this monument.

the family is cheapening the whole thing, AND MLK himself! Chat Icon

I think it is appalling. The country would like to build a monument to honor your father, and you ask for $$ for use of his likeness?? insulting to his legacy.

hmmm...If it was his speech used in a book maybe it would be different. Because I know there is a children's book that uses the words of the speech as part of the book (it's a picture book). I can kind of see licensing issues with that or something. But for a statue where people can go and honor him?! I think that's ridiculous.

He was a public figure... I don't think they should demand money.

Lots of families of late celebrities do that.

I do feel that it takes away from the greatness of this man though in concept.

If the money is used for charities, same cause, etc.. then I don't see the issue.
