Honestly...if the child was uncomfortable and having a difficult time seeing...I dont see what she did as a big deal...(Honestly Id be happy that she realized he was uncomfy and tried to make it better)

BUT how she spoke to you- COMPLETLY unacceptable and inappropriate!

But that's the thing . . . according to the OP the child hasn't been having any difficulty seeing at home. The teacher did it b/c she thought the child's hair was too long (and she's made comments in the past).

Exactly!

I would never ever let my sons hair get in his way of seeing...its always an appropriate length especially knowing he's going to be outside playing, in phys ed etc...

When I cut his hair in october and he had no curls left, she was jumping up and down and going "oh johnny how nice to see your face!!". And i'm like "ummm you could ALWAYS see his face and he doesn't look like my johnny anymore". I vowed then to never cut it that short because of a teachers comment, i just make sure to trim it every month or so...

How rude of her! Chat Icon What business is it of hers how long your son's hair is? You can grow it to the floor if that's your preference! Chat Icon

Of course she can grow it to the floor, but if it's not tied back and the child can't do his work or is having a hard time navigating the school environment and it becomes a safety issue (because he can't see), I think it's well within the school's right to say something. Not saying that's the case here since the OP said he can see, just playing devil's advocate.

There is no excuse for the rudeness and use of a binder clip by the teacher though.

Re: Ok, so I pick johnny up from school today...there is a paperclip in his hair..

It was way out of line to do it and it was way out of line to tell you to cut his hair. If she felt that his hair was interfering with his vision or his ability to do work, then perhaps suggesting an alternative style would have been appropriate. Had I done that in my classroom, I'd be collecting unemployment right now.

If it was making him uncomfortable, she could have used a hair tie, used gel in the interim until she could have asked the mom to tie it back in the future.

I dont know many teachers that have hair tyes and gel in their classroom...???

Thats why i said IF the child was uncomfortable...

The teacher was wrong... Im not defending her... but I dont think the paper clip is the issue...I think her attitude and remark is the MAIN problem here...

I gotcha....

I more or less was saying if the child was constantly pushing his hair out of his eyes... or was saying it was bothering him...

If she was trying to resolve a problem- then what she did was fine (never ever what she said)

But if you are sure its because she doesnt like his hair- well thats a whole other story.

Seriously, who does she think she is?! I certainly don't think she should be telling you what to do with your child. He obviously functions fine with the haircut that you have given him. I would be ticked!Chat Icon

Re: Ok, so I pick johnny up from school today...there is a paperclip in his hair..

Completely inappropriate. I would be angry as well.It is not her place to decide when your child should have his haircut. As a teacher, I see kids who IMO need haircuts daily, but would NEVER say anything because I know it is not my place. I would also be annoyed with the fact she put a paper clip in a 2 1/2 year old's hair, talk about choking hazard. I hope you said something.

Ok, what the hell is she playing beauty shop with your kid for? Her job is to teach, not give hair cutting advice.

I would be beyond p!ssed.

Ok, I don't think that what the teacher did was appropriate at all. She should have told you this in a more professional manner. Even though you cut it, some of the pieces might have been falling in his eyes without you noticing it. I think its good that they told you that his hair if falling in his eyes but not the WAY they went about it.

Re: Ok, so I pick johnny up from school today...there is a paperclip in his hair..

I didn't read all of the responses, but I have a POV.

I worked in day care for 4 years and I had an adorable little boy in my class who had hair about as long as in the picture you posted.

Anyway- in the SUMMERTIME, this little boy would be running around, be sweating so much he was drenched, his sweaty hair was in his eyes, and he seemed to be annoyed by it.

His mom was sweedish and was very against cutting his hair. (She gave this as an excuse- i'm not just saying it's a cultural thing)

So- I would use a hair tie and put his hair in a mini ponytail with as much hair as would stay up. I never let his mom see, and never told her to cut his hair(I never would tell anyone that), but he seemed so much happier and more comfortable with his hair away from his face.

It may not have been appropriate, but I truly did have his comfort at heart. And I would never use a binder clip- because that could be dangerous.

That was just in the summer though when he was sweating to death...

that is TOTALLY INNAPROPRIATE!!

I would contact teh administrator of the school, in my opinion that is nearly "emotionally abusive" to a child. The teacher set the child up to be teased not to mention he could have gotten hurt.

THe appropriate thing would have been for her to mention to you that he was having a hard time seeing or getting things done because of his hair. It's not even her PLACE to suggest a hair cut!!!

I'd be FURIOUS and would NOT let this slide!! This teacher needs to learn how to deal with these things appropriately

I completely agree. That is embarrassing and humiliating for your son as well as your family. He is a human being and a person with feelings and she could be a little sensitive. Very unprofessional.

I would be appalled if I picked up my child from preschool and saw a binder clip in his hair put there by his TEACHER no less Chat Icon

I definitely think she was out of line and what she said to you was uncalled for. I hope you can discuss this with the director because I think her "opinion" about your son's hair needs to be nipped in the bud !

I would have been in the adminstrators office before she blinked. That kind of behavior is completely inappropriate from a teacher. She is not his parent and she has no say in the length of your sons hair!

my kid has a mop.

a single mention of a haircut in a nice note would have been enough. after that, the issue is dead.

She was wrong. Its none of her business.

Pizzed would not even describe how I would feel. I would have told that teacher off and then went to the director with the paperclip still in his hair and told the director a thing or two.

If you want his hair to be as long as possible it's your business.

Re: Ok, so I pick johnny up from school today...there is a paperclip in his hair..

I'm a teacher and I've had kids in my class with "hair in their face" issues. I've had some kids in my class come to school, "uncombed" to say the least. I've put up hairs in ponytails with elastic bands and I've brought hair bands to school for certain little girls to get their hair out of ther eyes, but I would NEVER use those type of clips to get the hair out of their face. That is not right and I would find it offensive if it was done to my kid. I would say somethign to the teacher. Write her a note letting her know you don't appreciate it and next time a little note letting you know about his hair in his face would surfice.
