Update re: paperclip in hair

Well I spoke with the teacher after class.

She seemed to listen and understand where I was coming from but I KNOW she thinks I am overreacting. She goes "You know I felt that he was squinting and his hair was getting in his eyes a bit and I didn't want to chance him falling". I told her I understand her looking out for him, but I didn't want metal in my childs hair and a simple note to me or talking to me when I pick him up would have been fine. She was nodding the whole time and she did apologize but she said she honestly just grabbed waht she could find to keep the hair back for a short time.

I told her that her approach could have been better...that telling me it was a "hint" to cut his hair didn't sit well with me and I found myself thinking about it a lot yesterday. Again I repeated to her that all it takes is a note or a mention to me that she feels maybe his hair is getting in the way of his sight.

At the end of the talk is when I kind of got annoyed all over again.....she goes "OK mom we're on the same page, I get it..no more paperclips". I do not know if she was being snarky w/ me or not. Its very hard to tell. She also thanked me for trimming the front of his hair which I did last night b/c I didn't want this to happen again....

I am going to be composing an email to the director regarding the other stuff (no mention of problems/concerns until an IEP meeting) because I feel its time to do that.

Thanks everyone for your comments/advice. It is as always very much appreciated!!!

I would be very annoyed.

What if he fell and hit his head where the clip is? For a child his age, it seems like an accident waiting to happen.

I'd be peeved. - He's YOUR kid. If you want his hair to be down to his knees that's YOUR business ........

If she said "Johnny was complaining that his hair was in his eyes" that would be different ..........

I'm so happy you guys validated my feelings.

It was a weird feeling..I left just kinda feeling sad in a way...he looked so silly and like he was being punished. He kept touching the clip not knowing what to make of it. Chat Icon

YES, I would be po'd if my son's teacher pinned my his hair back with a paper clip, no less! If my son's hair was distracting him, telling me at pickup would of been sufficient enough.

I'd be pizzed off too. It's not up to her to determine what his hair should look like. She embarassed him.

I'd say something to her & to the director. That's bs. If it was bothering him or getting in his way, then she should say just that "It seems to be getting in his way".

I once had a daycare teacher tell my daughter if she wore her boots with strings again, she was going to cut the strings off. Maddie came home all upset about it. I was furious & told the director the next time the teacher threatens to destroy my kids' clothes, we were going to have a serious problem. If the clothes are a problem, you say something to the parent. That was my calmed down response. Before that DH had to calm me down because my first thought was to tell the teacher as long as we were destroying each other's property I was going to key her car.Chat Icon

ITA with ALL, Im PEEVED!

A simple letter stating that your son was having probs seeing due to his hair would of been enough, and I dont think I would of loved that either but better than what SHE did! Chat Icon

The funny thing is that it isn't even really LONG. Its just the one side that gets a bit longer and its curly so day to day it will look longer or shorter depending on how much curl his hair has.

She asked me back in October too to cut his hair b/c she felt it was getting in his eyes and causing him to fall occasionally..I told her that he was just clumsy, lol but I cut it anyway REALLY short and I hated how it looked. I love his curls, I never let it get out of control and it just irriated me big time to see him look that way...there was NO reason for this huge azz clip to be in his hair...

Seriously, I can tolerate alot, but to put a binder clip in his hair? I would have flipped out! That's mean and plain stupid. That must have been bothersome for him too. Grrrrrr Chat Icon

Re: Ok, so I pick johnny up from school today...there is a paperclip in his hair..

that is TOTALLY INNAPROPRIATE!!

I would contact teh administrator of the school, in my opinion that is nearly "emotionally abusive" to a child. The teacher set the child up to be teased not to mention he could have gotten hurt.

THe appropriate thing would have been for her to mention to you that he was having a hard time seeing or getting things done because of his hair. It's not even her PLACE to suggest a hair cut!!!

I'd be FURIOUS and would NOT let this slide!! This teacher needs to learn how to deal with these things appropriately

There is only one girl in the class out of 7 kids (small preschool class) and she has really short bangs. So I don't think that has been an issue.

She has told me before that she loves johnnys curls and how lucky he is to have that kind of hair....but when it gets the tiniest bit long she hints to me to cut it. Its annoying but she NEVER did this before. The paperclip in his hair really bothered me. It's so odd!!

NOT their place to tell you that, nor was it their place to paperclip his hair. I would be angry.

ETA - for all she knows, you and hubby won't cut his hair for religious reasons. She was REALLY out of place.

He is 2 1/2. Honestly this paperclip was HUGE...I don't think he would have tried to eat it, but you never know.

I don't know whether to say anything to the director....I hate causing conflict but seriously his teacher has been making me pretty irriated lately...

She is a special needs teacher. I liked her a lot in the beginning. She seems to love my son and want the best for him, but she has never approached things correctly. SHe will tell me he is doing "beautifully" over and over and over...then we sit down for and IEP meeting and she unloads so much on me, I left in tears last time.

I am just feeling pretty overhwelmed lately, but that is a whole other story!!
