Any advice on helping my DD read?

I heard they don't need to be able to read going into Kindergarten but I want to try to get her doing some reading before next Sept. She knows the sounds each letter makes and can sort of spell if you sound it out for her but she's definitely not reading.

My DS learned how to read at 3 1/2 years old, with minimal help, so even though I have an older child, I can't go by my experience with him bc I know it was unusual.

Any advice or programs that were helpful?

TIA

Honestly? Don't rush it. She'll read when she's ready! There's REALLY no rush and it sounds like she's already in a great place knowing all her letter sounds. Chat Icon

(Just FYI, I'm a kindergarten teacher)

I agree with pp. It sounds as if you are reading to her a lot already, which is great. Surround her with books, lhelp her out with the sounds and her alphabet, let her see the rest of the family reading, and not a lot of tv, and she should do just fine.

Andrew is reading and spelling the little words these days - like cat, dog, bus, etc. Longer words he sounds out but doesnt necessarily get them. Every night we read them books before bed, so I'll often stop mid-sentence and show him where I am and let him "read" the next word. A lot of that is memory, since we read some stories a lot, but it helps him in recognizing the words and the sounds.

And I also have to say that a lot of his games for his Leapster help - I think the Clifford reading one gets him very interested.

Not sure what else since its my first experience and when I think back, I can still remember oh so vividly learning to read a Spot book in 1st grade!

ITA! (I'm a 1st grade teacher LOL) I'd just say keep reading with her and exposing her to books and her letters.

Start with the letters of the alphabet. My DD could read them at around 4, and then I slowly introduced the sight words and now she can read all of them. She just started kindergarten and her teachers are amazed with how much reading she can do.

DS is in Kindergarten, and reading at roughly a 5th grade level (maybe higher... I keep getting him more advanced books, and he keeps reading those, too! Chat Icon . Even his teacher is amazed at his reading level.)

He started reading the DVR menu. He learned early on that if he could figure out how to read the shows on the DVR, he could watch what he wanted.... Chat Icon

We also have Closed Captioning on the TV all the time. He started pointing out when the CC text didn't match what was being said! Chat Icon Chat Icon

DD is 2.5, and already recognizes some letters. She takes the LeapFrog magnet letters and tells me what some of the letters are.

We never push either of them. I think pushing things before they are ready usually backfires.

Maybe you could make a "menu" of things DD can have for dinner. The reward of getting to pick what she wants may help encourage her.

Re: Any advice on helping my DD read?

Exposing her to literacy will give her all the pre-reading skills she needs.

Understanding left to right progression (which happens naturally when opening a book with her and looking at the pages from beginning to end) and pointing to each word as you read to show her that letters=words will be a good start. that's all you will need to do. she will get it!
