Spinoff to Classy and Not Classy - read for details...need advice.

Ok..a while ago I posted something with regards to the fact that our current landlord found it "unclassy" to have your windows open all the way. (Our windows turn outward. We summed it up to them being a little off ..so whatever.

Now here's the story. They have been trying to rent the apartment above us for over 2 months now and have had ALOT of people come to see it. Even though we have no say..we were curious and would look every now and then to see who was coming. Some were a little off the wall, and others weren't. Now on Saturday at 9am our landlord arrives and we were told we'd be getting new neighbors. She said they would be moving in early. Then she went on to tell my husband "he's white and she's black..BUT they are VERY classy", and they have an 11 year old son and are getting married in August. DH looks at her like "ok??". We found it kind of strange how she immediately said "BUT they are very classy" after mentioning the woman was black. So we just said to each other ok..whatever, we'll just have to get used to them being on top of us and the noise.

Now, all day I was in and out, and there were no signs of anyone moving in, so I figured they weren't coming until Sunday. WRONG!! At 8:30pm a truck arrives and they begin moving in at that time. Ok it was Saturday..but I found it so ODD that someone would move in so late, but I shrugged it off. Now when I started to get annoyed was when it was 1:00am and they were STILL moving sh** around, banging, dropping, and the kid who is NOT 11, but 8 years old, was running back and forth. All of this ruckus didn't stop until 2:30am. So of course I was UPSET! DH is at work mind you..because he works nights (LUCKY HIM!!)

I woke up Sunday and they were gone early. Again..at 8:00pm here they come with the truck, and they are moving stuff in, until almost 11:30pm. I decided to peek out of the window just to get a look at who they were.

Now I'm sorry..if THEY are what she called "Classy", my DH and I must be "UPPER CLASSY", because this couple (forgive me for saying this) looked like they were reformed drug users. I looked at DH and said are they serious? I have come to the conclusion that our landlord got desperate and gave the apartment to whoever would take it. I'm not usually one to judge...but honestly, I just couldn't help but do it. I know it's wrong..but when I have a gut feeling, most of the time it's right. I guess I'm basing it on a time where I lived with my son alone in NJ and a couple moved in who also had a child. The landlord told us they were nice people, and I just didn't have a good feeling about them and I mentioned it to her. They also looked like former drug addicts. They ended up moving in, and a week later, it turns out I was right!! Not only that..but the husband/boyfriend used to beat the sh** out of her and I had to hear this all the time. The cops were called, SO MANY times, it was ridiculous. He was also selling drugs, was recently out of prison and since I was living alone at that time I was DEFENITELY afraid. Of course I ended up moving.

DH is a cop, but I don't want to have to go through another ordeal like that again.

Am I wrong for feeling like I want to save save save so that we can get out of their and get our own house? Or am I being too judgemental?

OMG, I had almost the same situation as you -- when I lived in an apartment complex in Patchogue, I had people moving in at 1am also! It WAS the weekend, but still, I thought it was very inconsiderate to be making a racket like that so late -- they at least could have knocked on my door and said "I know it's late, but this is the only time we can move, etc.". At least give me the courtesy!

it turns out that they were always having parties, slamming their door, etc. It totally sux to live in apartments that have no soundproofing, so I feel your pain. You are not wrong to be PO'd, but HOPEFULLY, they will be decent neighbors until you can get out!

Or am I being too judgemental?

you got one look at them...

Actually no, I had seen them before when they came to "look" at the apartment. I also got one look at the other couple in NJ and look how that turned out.

People often get judge by one look. Not saying it's right..but I'm just worried, ESPECIALLY since we are expecting our baby in August.

You're not wrong for wanting to save your money & get your own house.

Are you being judgemental? Yes. You are judging a book by its cover - which may or may not be the case. There's nothing wrong with it if you're going to give them a chance to prove you right or wrong.

I do hope you are wrong & they are ideal neighbors. I do know that the last place a drug dealer/addict would want to live is above a cop.Chat Icon

I agree. And, I'd take it a step further - I'd unleash a mouthful on your landlord for making that kind of discriminatory comment.

It really may not be their fault for having to move in so late - it's happened to me where I couldn't make the UHaul reservation until close to 8pm. After packing up my stuff and my husband's stuff at his apartment, we didn't get to our new place until close to midnight.

Thanks.!!! It's so hard ....but I am defenitely going to give it a chance. I just hope I'm not right.

That is true re: DH. And the landlords have a BAD habit of telling people what he does..which I don't agree with at all.

you're fine for wanting to save for a house... that's normal...

BUT, give them a chance... you just took a few glances at them...they were moving in to a new place- how "classy" can they look when they are doing that , know what I mean...

I completely agree with this statement. I think many of us (myself included) make a first impression based on a first look. I think it is human nature.

I hope you are open to changing your initial opinion once you get to know them. I also really hope that you are wrong Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I can see where you are coming from. You had a bad situation once before and your intuition was right. However, it seems you are judging these people based on the past. Granted, they made an extremely bad first impression, but, you never know. They may turn out to be some of the best people you will ever know.
