My Dr's are killing me
I'm starting to think that they pull the size of the baby out of the air...
last week at my 36 week appt, the Dr. told me my uterus was not measuring large and the baby should be small-average.
Today at my 37 week appt. I had a different Dr. and she says my baby will probably be close to 9 lbs. She scheduled an ultrasound for next week to see if we can get a size, but I've heard those aren't all that accurate either.
I know it's all a guessing game, but they are just killing me, I wonder how big the baby will be next week!?!
Any BTDT Moms find that the ultrasound was pretty accurate or way off?

Re: My Dr's are killing me
With my DS at our 38.5 week sono the baby was measuring 9.6lbs, he was born the following day at 9.12 so with me they were right on

IMO they are way off.
2 days before my son was born they estimated him to be 8.5 NO MORE then 9lbs.
He was 9lbs 14ozs

WOW! My sister's was off by over a pound as well ...this makes me a bit nervous
I guess this baby is coming out one way or another, so no point stressing over size, right?

Re: My Dr's are killing me
The dirty little secret that doctors don't tell us is that an ultrasound can be off by 2-3lbs, which makes a HUGE difference for a baby!
5 days before I delivered DD, I was told I was going to have a HUGE baby. 5 days later, I delivered my 6lb peanut

Re: My Dr's are killing me
If you have knowledgeable people doing the sono the range of error is "supposed" to be +/- 1 pound. I found that my sonos were very accurate - they told me they thought my DD would be about 9-10 lbs depending on when I went - at the hospital they were taking guesses in the OR before my csection (I had already been in labor for about 22/23 hours) that she was 9 lbs 4 oz and the OB was EXACTLY right.

Re: My Dr's are killing me
I had a growth sono around 36 weeks and they measured my son at over 9lbs. He was born at 39 weeks and only weighed 8lbs 5oz. So it was off for me.

The bigger the better IMO - more to kiss and squeeze!
Seriously though - believe me I understand what you are feeling - it is so scary to not know! I thought if I had a baby over 8.5lbs I would die. I was petrified. I almost passed out when they told me his weight! Could be why people thought I was having twins!

Re: My Dr's are killing me
i was told during a LABOR SONO like at the time i was trying to deliver, that my son MAYBE weighed 8 lbs...that i shouldnt have a problem getting him out...
after 4 hours of pushing, and a vacuum extraction later, he came out, a whopping 10 lbs 1 oz...22 1/4 inches long they have no clue IMHO if you ask me!

Re: My Dr's are killing me
This is really funny! I guess I won't put much stock in technology!
I am a little nervous about having a big baby, especially since the smallest baby this generation has been 8lb 6oz (the largest was 10lbs 6oz), but none of my sisters needed c-sections so I'm thinking it will all work out.
...but man a 6 lb peanut, sounds so nice

Re: My Dr's are killing me
how has your belly been measuring?? On time or ahead?? I would put more trust in external belly measurements then an ultrasound ANY DAY!!! Ultrasounds tend to be way off!!

Re: My Dr's are killing me
My belly has been normal all along, usually the measurements have corresponded with the week - at 34 weeks I was 34cm, at 36 weeks she didn't give me the number but said my uterus was not measuring large (my 34 and 36 week appts were with the same DR. and I had a different Dr. today), today I didn't ask how large my uterus was, but she said the baby was good size - and when I asked her what that meant she said it'll be close to 9 lbs.
I know each Dr. will have different measurements, but I figured they would be close. I'm wondering if she was just off today
...I also got a little talking to for gaining 2 lbs this week we did celebrate thanksgiving twice ...so Maybe I was just bloated

Re: My Dr's are killing me
With both of my kids the ultrasounds were pretty accurate.
With Caiden at my 39w2d appt. I had an ultrasound and they said that he was measuring 9lb 12oz, give or take a lb. Well, they scheduled me for a c-section for that Monday morning. I went into labor on my own the night before and he was born at 10lb 12oz. And with Connor he was a scheduled c-section and they were accurate with him too. They said he was going to be just as big as Caiden was. He was!

Re: My Dr's are killing me
My veteran midwife estimated my DS would be no bigger than 7lb 4 oz. He was 8 lb 8oz.
There are Moms here who scheduled c-sections because of a big baby, and the baby was a full pound lighter.

Re: My Dr's are killing me
way off for me. a half hour before my csection they gave me an ultrasound to make sure my baby was still breech and a csection was necessary. At that time they told me the baby was about 7 and a half pounds. She was born at 9 pounds even.

Re: My Dr's are killing me
I think sometimes the key is who does the sono….I have a friend who went to a specialist and they told her 8.10 baby was born at 8.8 My dr told me that she never tells her patients what the regular sono tech estimates for weight because its not that accurate. I went for 2 growth sonos at the hospital, they both said over 9lb and DS was born at 9lb 14oz. But my OB said all along that she could tell it was a big baby, she said she thought over 9lb (her 30+ years of experience were right!)
I agree with Diana the bigger the better, I love DS’s cubby little cheeks. He is too cute! And I am a believer that bigger babies sleep better - my nieces and nephew were over 9lbs as well as DS and they all slept through the night by 8 weeks.

Re: My Dr's are killing me
Extremely accurate for me. DD was 5.8lbs on sono at 32 weeks, when I had her at 36 weeks she was 7.4 lbs, which means she gained about .5 lbs a week until delivery.
