Re: Heartburn
My heartburn started at 11 weeks and I had it EVERY day until DS was born...As they were pullling him out, I could literally feel sudden relief!
Anyway, Tums and milk worked for me most of the time. And ice cream does count as milk!

Re: Heartburn
Yeah, my heartburn started around week 18 or so. Not fun!! Tums or a glass of milk seem to help me. They say other dairy products like yogurt, but I didn't find that helpful.

Re: Heartburn
I had horrible heartburn during the first trimester and part of the second trimester. My doctor told me I could take Zantac 75 twice per day. It helped tremendously.

I would take Tums during the day, and then the nights got so ridiculous that I wound up taking Zantac 150.

Re: Heartburn
I have it now from week 8 on and the last pregnancy the whole time too. The only thing that makes me feel better is the extra calcium I get from all the Tums. Otherwise, it stinks.

Re: Heartburn
The heartburn early on is caused by an increase in stomach acid which is hormonally cause by the pregnancy.
I had suck bad reflux that I was eating 15-20 Tums a day and no relief. Finally my Dr. prescribed pepcid and it made it so much better.
I would ask your OB or primary care physician for what medication they recomend. Don't just go and purchase one of the over the counter ones.
I specifically asked about Zantac and my primary said it was a lower class medication then Pepcid and that is why they put me on this one first.
Feel better!

Re: Heartburn
mine started at 10 weeks and let up the minute DS was born.
Tums work also drink milk it helps too...and I consider ice cream to be millk so that was an added benefit~
If it gets really unbearable talk to your OB they can give you something stronger than Tums!
ETA: also, google it and see what foods to steer clear from. After eating dont lay down for at least 30 minutes At night sleep with multiple pillows to keep your chest elevated it will keep the acid from coming up into your throat

Re: Heartburn
Tums are great since they give you extra calcium which you need anyway. But into the 2nd tri when it gets unbearable, I started using Zantac 75(the generic brand) and it works wonders!
In addition to avoiding foods- caffeine, soda- anything fizzy for me, salad dressing, tomatoes, chocolate, etc. I also recommend eating small meals throughout the day. I get the worst heartburn on an EMPTY stomach
