Re: Burning candles

According to a woman who was on channel 12 news, on the segments LI Naturally, she saiys it is NOT good. After DH saw that he wont allow me to burn candles anymore.
She went on about cleaning with NON-toxic fumes, and no scented candles, and saying that there is more air pollution inside your home than outside with all the cleaning we do.

Re: Burning candles

I looked into candles because of my business and "atmosphere". I read a lot and found they are harmful.

If you look at someone's house who burns lots of candles you will see a film on the wall. The paint gets darker. So that film will coat your lungs.

Is it harmful once in a while? Probably not and if you ventilate your house well it should be fine. I would not use them in the same room with a baby though.

They do make more natural candle. Beeswax and wick made of natural fibers.

Wow I had no idea. Is it more the flame or the scent?
Would getting one of those warmers that just melts the wax be as bad?

Re: Burning candles

I mostly use battery operated candles. I did some work with the Home Safety Council a few years ago and they were huge proponents of them. Too many house fires start with a neglected candle.

I do light a regualar scented candle once in a while, but the battery operated ones come in different scents too and look real.

They are actually one of my favorite conversation pieces - I'll ask guests if they think the candle is real or not. All say they thought it was real until I asked them.

Re: Burning candles

I have never burned a candle since DD was born for these reasons. I just didn't think it was the best idea to have her breathing in the scented fumes.

Re: Burning candles

now that i have a baby and a cat i don't burn candles of ANY kind. besides the smoke, they are so dangerous due to possibility of fire--it takes a split second to knock one over. it takes a short amount of time for a room to go up in flames, and i don't take that chance anymore. the few candles i have are for decoration only.
