I did my doctorate full time while working full time. It was hard, and I didn't see a whole lot of DH. I had a lot of homework between regular homework and writing my dissertation. I usually devoted all day Sunday to homework, and I usually woke up at 6AM on weekends to get homework done and spend a little time with DH. I missed a lot of family/friend events/bdays/etc., and DH took on some of the house stuff. I started to resent stuff like cleaning/grocery shopping, etc., b/c DH had so much more free time than I did, but it was still falling on me.
Anyway, it's done, and I am glad I did it, and DH and I are great and stronger than ever, but I won't lie, it was a tough several years.

Its tough but can definately be done if this is somethign you really want. I am currently pursuing my masters and work full time. Last year I was doign Tech support which included working after hours and bringing stuff home. The best thing make it easier is manage your time very well. I read my chapters on the bus on the way to work, in between classses and set time aside at night or on the weekend to catch p on school. All you need perserverance, strength and Caffeine. So it definately can be done and since your job isnt demanding after hours, now will be the best the time to pursue an education. Good luck

This is SO true! My program took 3 years b/c of pre-reqs that i had to take and i remember talking to DH about this same topic right before i went to register for my first class, and he gave me this little pep talk that i'll now give to you  Two years is going to pass no matter what. You can still be doing what you've been doing and wondering about what your next step is going to be, or you could be done with this program and starting your career- there's such a big difference between the feeling of having a job versus having a career. Honestly, looking back, it really did go so fast. Some days felt like forever, and sometimes it was hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel, but then it felt like the semesters flew.
Also, the schedule sometimes isn't as overwhelming as it seems on paper. Classes get out early, holidays roll around often... it's all about time management. Of course there's some sacrifices you make- there were so many times where i wish that i could stay home and lay on the couch with DH watching TV, but i'm better b/c of what i chose to do instead. Also, now i make a nice salary and get 7 and a half weeks vacation- so we really get to make up for lost time!
There were people in my program that worked full time, went to school and also had small children at home (some even gave birth while they were in school and came to class the following week). The point is that where there's a will, there's a way. I was definitely amazed by some of the people that i went to school with and i also surprised myself sometimes, but you'd be amazed at what you can accomplish when you decide that you're going to do it. Having a great support system also helped though- DH definitely picked up alot of slack around here, but that's what teamwork is all about.
As far as the clinical hours though- that's where many of us used our vacation time. Sometimes you have to get creative- but you'll figure out a way to make it work. It may not be easy, but it definitely will be worth it. Good luck!

Thanks everyone for your input and sharing your experiences! I know it's going to be hard and i'm not great at managing my time (procrastinator) but i'll have to learn. I just really need to work towards a career change. Thanks again.

It's hard, but totally do-able. Just be prepared for some looong days.
I am so glad to be done, but 100% happy I did it! I got my educational adminstrative degree while teaching full time.

It's not easy but I somehow did it my last two years of school, maybe it was 3 years. My grades did suffer but I got through it. Passed my classes, my rotations and my boards.
I think you have to really want what you are working towards so that in your mind it's all worth it in the end.

It's tough but WORTH it.
I worked full time and went to school at least 4 nights a week to get it done. One semester was a killer but I'm so glad I did it! What made it especially hard was that I was going to school in the city, but I moved back to LI so I got home really late every night (but it was good time on the LIRR to get school work done).

I did it, worked 2 jobs went to school full time at night. I was young,20-24, but did it. It's hard but doable!

It is hard. My masters program is online, but it is still a ton of work. It was especially hard working and going to school while pregnant! I had my two finals 2 weeks after giving birth!
This quarter (starting tomorrow) is going to be even harder 
But I will graduate summer 09, it went so fast and was totally worth it.

I worked full-time while getting my Masters. Only took 2 classes per semester, but my entire weekends were spent in the library doing work.

I did it to do a career change myself.
I went 3 times per week for 3 years. I also did clinical hours in my last 2 semesters.
I honestly could not do 4-5 times per week for 2 years. It was too much for me.
But it does go by fast really.
It required dedication and sacrifice but it was so worse it.

I did it twice...First time when I was getting my Masters. I was taking 3-4 classes at a time. It really wore me down. I was working as a teaching assitant during the day and going to CW Post at night.
And for the last 2 years while getting my second masters I was working full time as a teacher in NYC and taking only 2 classes at a time but I was always worried about getting to class ontime and juggling work from school and work from Hofstra.
It can be done with time managment.

Wow what program is this? "4 nights a week for 4 hours per night (6-10pm)" for two years, that's a lot of classes.
It's for Diagnostic Medical Sonography. And I got it wrong, it's actually 6-10:30pm for 4 nights/week (mon-thurs) for 22 months... 82 credit hours plus lab hours and 1000 clinical hours!
I had a coworker who did this program at Sanford Brown. It was hard but she brought her books to work to study and the time did go fast. The hardest part was balancing the clinical hours with her work at the end.

right now im going through something similar.
i work full time at a job i dont like
i work part time at a job i love on the weekend and one night during the week
and i just started going back to school in september part time two nights a week in the city after my full time job.
if you want it bad enough you will make it work no matter what.

It's annoying but it is definitely tolerable. I did it when I got my masters degree. I had 3 classes, a full time job and an internship. 2 years isn't so bad. Good Luck!

It was easier for me when I was younger and could get by on less sleep for extended periods. But if you remain focused, it's not too bad. You may just have to cut back on socializing. GL!

It is hard, but if you are organized and focused, it's not that bad. I worked full time as a police officer, on the midnight tour -11:15pm-7:50am and went part time to Law School for three years. I went to school about 4 days per week- from 4pm-10pm. I slept during the day and studied whenever I had the chance. It sucked but it was doable. Go for it!!

it's definitely harder than JUST going to school, but it's worth it in the end.
me too.. i did it while going for my BA, actually there were times when i worked more than one job.
now im getting my masters and student teaching and working.. when i can.. right now work is not a priority..
i knew that i wouldnt really be able to work going into this semester and i planned accordingly..
but to answer your question... four nights a week is a lot... is there a way you can do two nights a week and take summer and intersession classes to make up for the other two nights.. just speaking from experience.. it can be done but (i dont know if this is the case) if youre married, own a home.. theres other things that go on in your life other than just school and work.. KWIM?? i would really think hard about making the commitment...

I'm currently taking 12 graduate credits and working full time... AND being a mom... AND being fabulous.
It's a LOT of work... but it's *doable*
(the fabulous part comes easy though)
I'm lucky that my job doesn't keep me too busy so I can read and study during my downtime.
It's tiring but as long as you can manage your time well, it's definitely doable.
I think I'm going to take less classes next semester and go part time, b/c I don't feel as though I am absorbing as much as I could, if I had the time to focus on just one or two classes

Both DH and I did it, I was getting my MBA and he was going to law school. I will say that if we both weren't in school, I relationship would have been really strained. When you make the decision to go to school and work it will impact your relationship. There will be less quality time with your SO bc you'll be in class, studying, trying to keep up with chores and plain 'ol tired. Your SO needs to be prepared for how it will change his quality of life so he's not blind sighted.
It can be done, but it will take sacrifices from both of you. Keep the lines of communication open and make sure you schedule time to just be a couple.
