I am somewhere between
"as little as possible. laws, low taxes, let me be in charge"

and

"regulate things, but maintain some personal autonomy."

I have a STRONG belief that people need to take responsibility for their actions. Yet, I know that everyone needs help now and then, but DON"T tell me WHOM to help or HOW to help. LET me decide where the money I WORKED FOR should go & how to donate it. I believe that some people need welfare when they are having a rough time, but there should be time limits on it, like a year. The "government will take care of me mentality" that gets passed from one generation to the next makes my blood boil. I need my money for MY KID, not to support someone who is on welfare for 10 years, drives a Mercedes and is milking the system.

If they need help for a year to help them get their life back on track, then yeah, I am all for my taxes paying for it. BUT not for 5, 10, 15 years or more. SSI, SSD, and Medicare/Medicaid I feel differently about b/c most people on it are REALLY sick or elderly and REALLY need it. There are always a few bad apples, but if someone is too sick to work, they still need to live. SO in those instances, I would have no problem with my tax money paying for it. I would even donate more $$$ to non-profits (that are not run by the gov) to help these folks.

I have a HUGE problem with paying people who are NOT sick, NOT elderly who refuse to get their act together, make poor choices all b/c the government will continue to pay them welfare.

I have a HUGE problem with gov run entities b/c the government are wasteful with tax payers money with EVERYTHING they do. Welfare, medicare, medicaid, military, all HUGE fiscal failures and need to be reevaluated by someone with a business background. IMHO. We SHOULD NOT get rid of them, just make sure they are not wasting money. We need to make sure that veterans, and people who are REALLY sick are getting the services they need and not falling between the cracks b/c they do not know "how to play the game" and manipulate the system. Then, if there was an OVERHAUL and people who really needed the services got them, I would be one happy tax payer. Chat Icon

I know many of you will not agree with me, but I worked in a non-profit where I saw people milking the system so my opinion is based on WHAT I SAW working in that environment.

i agree with this 100%.

in addition, i think the govt is so inefficient that if it were to be a business it would sink in no time. putting them in charge of more programs is not the answer unless someone is going to shake things up and make govt employees get rid of the "got mentality." i work in dc and lots of my friends work for the govt. i know there are exceptions to the rule, but there's a reason the stereotype exists!

Re: Poll: What do you feel should be govts function in our lives/in the world?

I don't know - I go back and forth on this.

There are things about the government in the UK that I absolutely cringe at - the CCTV everywhere, the idea of government issued ID cards, etc, etc - and I feel that it's all way too socialist for me. But then there's the national health care programme - which isn't without it's flaws, of course! But it does allow for a lot of autonomy and freedom, as well as taking some of the stress out of losing your job (suddenly became very important to me when a family member was in a really horrible position).

I'm a huge Ayn Rand fan - I love her philosophy that man should be heroic, that the purpose of his life is his own happiness and fulfillment, that there is absolute inherent nobility in working hard to achieve your goals...but I think that that's not a realistic view of the world that we live in today.

So, I suppose that in an ideal world, I would like government to be hands-off, but I just don't think it's relevant to today's society. I think the government has the capacity to do good things, but the desire to create a sustainable system that takes care of its citizens while acknowledging that they're smart enough and capable enough to make their own decisions needs to be at the heart of it.
