Re: spinoff to marching of elephants.... Why do people

I have to say, though, that when the question is presented that way, people will take offense.
I know many families that love taking their kids to the circus - they went when they were little, and truthfully, most kids adore circuses and seeing the animals.
They don't think that the animals were starved, beaten, and intimidated. they just see elephants walking and lions jumping thru hoops, etc...
I'm a vegan, but I would never present a question like, "Why would ANYONE eat meat..." or "Why would anyone wear fur..." KWIM?
Imagine if someone posted something like, "Why would ANYONE tattoo their body?
I know people who would never get a tattoo, they don't like them, etc - but if they wanted to know why someone else does it, if they presented the question that way, they aren't really welcoming an answer..... it just comes across as a little attacking, whether you mean it to be or not....
mmmmm... GREAT response Liza - I bow down to you!

For some people, the only time they see animals (lions, tigers, bears, elephants, horses, zebras, etc) is at a circus (not everyone goes to zoos). For most people, clowns are funny. I am always amazed by acrobats. Tightrope walkers, trapeze artists, riding bikes on tightropes, balancing acts. There's also the vibe you get from being in a crowd.
As far as the cruelty to animals, I can only go by what I read, and according to the Ringling Brother's website, it doesn't seem that bad:
http://www.ringling.com/animals/care/care.aspx http://www.ringling.com/animals/answer.aspx
No offense--but considering that Ringling Brothers IS a circus--i highly doubt they would put info on their site about how they abuse animals...of course they are gonna have info that says their animals are taken care of perfectly.
Sadly--Ringling Bros. is known for its mistreatment of their elephants being chained for many hours on end....on animal rights sites.

i wasnt going to bring up the animal abuse, but ringling bros is pretty horrendous actually. their site would never say that though

FTR. I hate the circus.
unless it's the circus in the video for All I Want Is You.
then I love it.
but if it's not, I hate it.
I don't even like Circus of the Stars...and I wouldn't mind some cruelty over there

Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending them. I believe in the general statement "There's two sides to every story, and somewhere in the middle is the truth."
I don't believe Ringling's info 100%, just like I don't believe animal rights sites 100%.

i had no idea they had acrobats. thats the sort of answer i was looking for.
OK Jess- I'll bite.... considering you feel so misunderstood in this thread, I feel compelled to ask..... WHY didn't you ASK for that kind of information. For example:
Title: Why would anyone go to the circus?
Body: I am totally creeped out by clowns and I am horrifed at the treatment of the circus animals. So what other reasons are there to go?
My point is this: you are KNOWN for your animal cruelty threads- and it was pretty obvious to a number of people that this was likely what your thread was about.
i could have done that but i didnt think to. i reworded the title as to not offend anyone. and hopefuly not be taken the wrong way.
yes, im known for my cruelty free stuff BUT i havent brought up anything like that in a long time as it always gets so heated.
i guess my point is that not everything i post about is about animals.

see look,
other people thought it was funny.
had I meant it to be nasty, I wouldn't have said otherwise.
when I want to be nasty, I don't have to pretend or cover it up.
calling me bytchy and assuming I am on my period IS a bit nasty. but I don't scratch so easily.

Well I am thinking of taking DD. My sister and I discussed taking our kids together. I think she would enjoy the lights, music, clowns and animals. Its a fun atmosphere for children.

Re: spinoff to marching of elephants.... Why do people
I just posted about this over on parenting....
I HATE the circus!!!
Clowns totally freak me out. One time DH and I were driving and there was a clown in the car behind us. Scared the **** out of me. I made him pull over and let the clown pass.
Seriously, so many kids (and maybe adults ) are traumatized by the circus. I have no intention of ever going again or taking my son!

OMG the circus smells. I hope Max Power doesn't want to go. I'd rather take him to a Donkey Show.
