Re: wearing rosary beads as fashion

I went to catholic school and was taught that you are not allowed to wear rosary beads around your neck they are not a necklace,
i go into catholic schools as part of my job and i see the kids all wearing them as necklaces, i think it is accepted now
my thoughts are maybe its making the rosary more accessible to the kids and they also wear the bracelets with the saints pictures of jesus and mary pictures on it, at least the kids are into their religion

eta i hate when i see teenagers and such wearing them out and about it the street because you know that is just fashion
i think it needs to be done in an appropriate manner

Re: wearing rosary beads as fashion

As A Catholic, I find it a bit offensive. For some reason, it just corsses the line for me. I Know people wear crosses and miraculous medals, but there's something about people wearing rosary beads. I think this is mainly because most people that wear rosary beads wear the cheap plastic ones while wearing something else equally ridiculous. and look at the people that have worn them in the public eye... clearly not people that practice or revere the faith...Madonna comes to mind. She is a total blasphemer and one who has mocked the faith several times.

Also, a Catholic, rosary beads are NOT meant to be worn. A rosary is a prayer tool... and should be used as such. A crosss charm or saint's medal is clearly made to be worn; there is a big difference there. Yes, some Catholics do wear them or have them in the pocket (certain religious orders) but you can bet that those people are actually praying the rosary with them several times a day. they're not wearing them tot be like, "Look at me!"

i meant that they are not to be worn by people blaspheming the faith, which in my opinion, is the MAJORITY of people that wear rosary beads. you will not go into Mass or anywhere else wear there are a lot of Catholics present and will you see people wearing rosary beads. just doesn't happen. it is quite rare. some priests and nuns wear them because they are actually USING them to PRAY, not a fashion statement. And in fact, MOST priests and nuns DON't wear them. I can only think of ONE order of priests that do wear them and it's not around their neck, but around their waist.

IMO, rosary beads are a prayer TOOL, not jewelry.

and yes, i've been to italy... i go often as DH has family there... and i've never seen anyone wear them over there. and agin, i feel that rosary beads are not on sale to suit your FASHION, they are on sale to suit your PRAYER LIFE.

Re: wearing rosary beads as fashion

Again, if someone wants to wear their faith close to their heart, shame on anyone to criticize.

why does it offend you? this is not to any one poster just a general question-
does it really matter?
my opinion is that this is very pety and sad to read most of these responses.

do I wear a rosary bead, no but I would NEVER think it was a bad thing.

how someone wants to portray thier faith is solely their decision and fashion or not Im sure the good lord isnt saying oh no dont wear it.

This isn't true. It's technically not forbidden, as long as it is done with respect and with the right intentions.

Honestly I've never heard that. Every religious ed class I took told us it was a sacrilege.

I still think it's extremely disrespectful.

I agree with you. I went to Catholic school and was always taught that wearing a rosary strictly forbidden.

I went to a Private Catholic School and we were also told that you do not wear them as jewelry, I specifically remember half of my class getting detention b/c they put them around their necks...I dont know how true this is thoChat Icon

I wouldnt be offended as long as the person wearing it uses it as a prayer tool not as an accessory b/c that isnt what it is. But i guess to each his own. And I would bet money that half the people you see wearing them like jewelry aint going to church and praying the rosary

I am nto saying it is a bad thing. also, i agree with you that God is probably not saying " don't wear it." all i am saying is that for the people that wear it as an accessory it is a bad thing. again, i can't say that i know what these people are thinking when they wear them, or what is in their hearts, but i am saying that those that do wear them as jewlery are not wearing them to use them in the way that rosaries are intended to be used.

Re: wearing rosary beads as fashion

when i see this (usually at work) i immediately think gang member. i have never seen anyone else wear rosary beads for any other reason than to symbolize they were in a gang (although i may just be sheltered).

ETA: don't know if this matters but i am jewish, and i don't really have an opinion on whether people should or should not wear rosaries as a necklace.

Re: wearing rosary beads as fashion

I remember I gave rosary beads to our cleaning lady and she immediately thanked me and put them on around her neck with the other 3 she had. I am not offended if someone wears them. When I was kid I always thought they were so beautiful and wanted to wear them but told I wasn't allowed.

Re: wearing rosary beads as fashion

I would think that it would be sacriligious,
however I had family visit recently from Italy, and one cousin (male) is quite fashionable AND also a practicing Roman Catholic and he wore rosary beads around his neck, I dont think they were meant to be fashionable, because he wore them under his shirt(I happened to notice) it looked kinda cool.

I tend to agree with you. I think my real issues with it is if they are in fact ONLY worn as part of a useless fashion statement...making them in fact, nothing short of a trucker hat.

That does bother me. They are not meant to be fashionable. I do not think that it's the same as wearing a small crucifix or cross, those are meant as a religious symbol.

To each his/her own. It's not my thing.

I don't care what others wear as fashion statements as long as it's not a symbol of hate. I realize that they have ever legal right to wear anything they want but it doesn't make me want to kick them in the shins any less.

Agreed. Not my style, not my taste Whatever floats their boat...
