crib bumper dilema

Okay, so we rec'd our furniture (2 cribs, etc.) for the twins two weeks ago. When we set up each with the bedding, we realized the railing is way too thick for the bumper to be tide to. They are convertable cribs that are very chunky (but incredibly awesome). I always assumed we wouldn't use bumpers anyhow because of the SIDS issues, but they came with the bedding set. DH wants to use them because he was told how much babies hit their heads and he doesn't want them to be w/out a bumper. I can tie the sides and the back of the crib the way it should be, but the front and front corners (I think it's 3 ties total on each crib) can't be tide. The wood is too thick for the strap to reach. I said that we can't leave anything hanging because it's even more of a hazzard. So now my DH wants to either sew more fabric on the strap and then tie it that way - over the top mind you instead of the actual railing (yeah, how nice that would lookChat Icon ) or get heavy duty velcro and attach it to the actual crib and bumper. As much as I don't want the babies to bump their heads and I want to use the really cute bumpers, I am torn, even if we get it secured, because what if something happened. I would never forgive myself. I know they make the breathable bumper and have mentioned it to DH, but from the reviews it has no cusion, so if they bump themselves, they will still get hurt. UUUUGGGGGHHHHH!!!! What would you do in this situation?

My mom sews so she just took off the old ties and sewed on longer ties and put them in better areas to hold it snuggly on the convertible crib. It's an easy fix really....

There are millions of babies every day that tap their head into the side of their cribs. They can't possibly get enough momentum to cause any damage. Otherwise, it would be outlawed to have hard cribs.

I had a similar chunky crib (Pali btw) and I was able to work with the ties it came with. I was not able to tie to the 4 post corners but I adjusted the bumper and tied to the spindles - used all the ties and it was snug not saggy. The open end (seam) was not exactly centered in a corner to hide the opening - but other than that it worked great.

DS slept so much better with the bumper and the few times that we took it out to wash or pack (when we were moving) he was uncomfortable. I never worried about him getting caught in it and was sure to tighten the ties ocassionally as necessary.
