Could internals help move things along?

I had one today and I swear I thought my doctor wanted my water to break right on her table.

It hurt so bad and she was just all over the place pushing and stuff. I kind of thought she was doing it on purpose to move things along.

Could that be possible?

Yes!! I had a rough internal yesterday and was contracting a little this morning. Our induction is already scheduled for tonight, but this morning I wasn't sure if I was going to last that long because he definitely got stuff started!

Yes, she might have been "Stripping your membranes". I have heard of this and for many women they go into labor within 48 hours. Who knows, but I am going to ask that mine be stripped on Thursday!

I just did a google search on stripping your membranes and holy cow it's exactly what she did! Here's what I found:

Stripping the Membranes

When you have passed your due date and you are still pregnant, your doctor may want to strip your membranes. This won’t necessarily put you into labor, but some doctors think it helps to start the process.

To strip the membranes, your doctor will do a kind of pelvic exam in which she will feel around just inside your cervix where the membranes of the amniotic sac are attached. With her finger, she will push the amniotic sac away from where it has attached to the cervix. This process breaks the bridging molecules, which stick the membranes to the inside rim of the cervix. These bridging molecules are then converted into prostaglandins, which stimulate labor.

This “pelvic exam” is not the greatest experience. Some have complained that it is a little painful, if not just rough. But when you’re past your due date and still pregnant, you’ll do just about anything to get that baby out. And you thought stripping was just for show!

Re: Could internals help move things along?

I've been spotting last night and a little this morning. I'm feeling alot more pressure to so I hope it works. The doctor said this will happen and not to worry.

I'm due today and to be honest I really want the baby in my arms now. I'm just bored here at home sitting and waiting.

Re: Could internals help move things along?

I was hospitalized this past week and had several internals. Im only 30 weeks so they were definately not trying to start labor and assured me it was safe...maybe there is a way of doing an internal that strips the membranes and a way that doesnt?
