I agree with you - and while I really didn't read the whole thread to see what specific instances OP was referring to - I would venture to say that most material out there in the internet world is not protected by a copyright. And while I am a little rusty on all this ciopyright stuff (law school was quite a few years age) I do recall from my class in Internet intellectual property that these situations where you are merely quoting from a work with no intent of passing it of as your own are very difficult to win

In my industry it's an issue we run into all the time (Web Development & Internet Marketing)
Not so much with pictures, but with duplicate content. For example, if someone writes an article or an interesting post on their blog and it is copied and pasted elsewhere in its entirety, whatever site the search engine recognizes as the originator of the content will receive credit for it, and the other site will receive a duplicate content penalty. Now more often than not, SE's are able to tell where it came from, but you run the risk. Too many penalties like that and your site can be bounced from search engines. This is totally oversimplified for the sake of this discussion, but it's just another reason to cite properly.

I should add that I don't necessarily see people posting pictures and blurbs as a giant threat to the copyright owner generally... However, I don't think that posting something on an internet BB falls into any of the exceptions of which I am aware in copyright law.
Always open to learning new things (and I agree someone here getting sued for it is far-fetched) -- but I don't see how it applies.
Again, I am actually not sure what type of situations OP is referring to and maybe I am oversimplifying but If I go to the HOME board and post a picture of a print I want to put up in my livingroom for example, and ask for people's opinions on it and do not mention that the print is from such and such artist, I cannot imagine any judge's interepretation of copyright law would find that that particular use in a copyright infringement. Again I could be wrong I deal with securities not patents.

I agree completely that they are difficult to win, yes, but that doesn't mean that the action doesn't violate copyright laws. (And I even doubt many would ever get sued b/c it is so difficult to prove any damages -- and in many cases, damages may not even exist)
I'm not sure why you think the majority of information contained on the internet isn't covered by copyright laws, though. Copyrights aren't like patents, they don't necessarily need to be registered to be protected (though it's a good idea).
ETA - Copyright infringement only has two basic elements (1) ownership of a copyright by the plaintiff and (2) copying of the copyrighted work by the defendant.
And, most copyright cases are difficult to win. It's a very hard thing to prove. (I'm oversimplifying, too, and I do understand what you're saying! It's extremely unlikely that copying in this fashion would result in liability.)

If the picture is copyrighted (as I'm sure it is and as I'm sure the entire web site is), it would technically be copyright infringement... However, it's entirely unlikely you'd (a) be sued for that and (b) have caused any harm to the copyright holder.
So practically, you're right, it's not likely that there will be any liability.
