caught in the pipe burst
Ok, so as luck would have it, I was caught up in the pipe burst. I did not realize that I was sprayed until I stopped running and realize that there were these brown dots on the top half of my dress and all over my work bag and on my shoes. I don't know how much I breathed of the stuff. I also had just had my ultrasound two hours before - I am 8 weeks 4 days. Baby looked good - heart was beating away! Now I am beginning to get a little nervous after watching the news that they think it was asbestos. I immediately took a shower when I got home, but should I be worried?

I doubt you need to worry but I would call the doctor and keep listening to the news. If you want to be super cautious, get rid of those clothes.

Oh dear, how scary it must have been!
I'm sure everything will be fine, you weren't there as clean up crew, you were running away from it! Taking a shower as soon as you got in was the best idea. If you don't want to get rid of the clothes, seal them in a plastic bag until you can get them in the wash!

Thanks, I will. My DH was starting to freak me out because before I knew i was pregnant (I think I was 5 weeks already) I was gardening and using fertilizer and now with this he is yelling that he wants to put me in a plastic bubble. On 8/14, I go for the ultrasound which checks for downs and birth defects and DH said he actually feels nervous for that test, which is making me nervous too!

Exposure to asbestos would have have to be be over a longer period of time in order to have some effect on the fetus. Bag up your effected clothing in a sealed plastic bag and wait until the city determins what the levels are!
I am so sorry you got caught in this yesterday!

Thanks for all the replies. I feel a little better today. I left a message with my doctor. I am just going to try and relax today. I felt sick yesterday, but I think it was due more to the stress and the running and being on my feet for 3 hours and not eating/drinking for along period of time. Thanks again for the replies.

There's probably not too much to worry about since you weren't there for an extended period and you showered quickly, but I would worry too! Call your doctor to discuss--that might make you feel better. I'm not sure inhalants cross the placenta anyway.
I'm sorry this happened to you--it looked awfulL!

On the news today they said anybody caught in the 'cloud of spray' should bag up their clothes and take it to a place on Lexington Ave. (I saw it on wcbs) They are collecting the clothes and writing down the people caught in it to do testing.
They also explained that asbestos is bad under long term exposure (as mentioned above). They said even if you don't want to take your clothes to them, bag them up and get rid of them. But I say take them in and and least get try to get money for the clothes ruined.

I also heard that you should take your shoes and put them in the bag with the clothing. I am so sorry that you went through this and hope you are able to relax today. Did your obgyn return your call?
