My brother. He had to evacuate. He said there is a huge crater in the middle of Lexington Avenue. He was right across the street when it exploded. Thankfully he is ok!!!

I just got home from midtown a few blocks away. It looks terrible but much worse on the news because they're zooming in on the hole. And of course, you have people in hysterics running by screaming "it's a bomb" which is always a helpful reaction Chat Icon

Lex and 43rd I think? Or 41st? My brother's building was 1 block away and he was evacuated. He said his shoes were ruined walking home through all of the debris and water.

Re: Was anyone near the steam pipe explosion...

They are VERY concerned about Asbestos. On the news they are reporting that those pipes are wrapped in Asbestos and they are telling all the news people etc. to throw away the clothes they are wearing when they get home and shower immediately because you can't see the microscopic asbestos particles.

So scary! Chat Icon

Re: Was anyone near the steam pipe explosion...

Me Chat Icon I saw people just running down the hall leaving my office and someone said there'd been an explosion at the building near us. It was pretty scary. I work above Grand Central, so I'm always a little worried about something happening. We didn't know at the time that it was a transformer explosion.

Thank God, I just got off the train in Queens at that time. Had I been on the next train, I would have been evacuatedChat Icon

ETS: My stop is the first one in Queens, right after Lex.

It is blocks away from my old building. I'd be there right now had I not gotten PG.

Wow, when I worked in the city, that is where I worked! I didn't even hear about it yet because I do not have the TV on. I hope all is ok.

Re: Was anyone near the steam pipe explosion...

I just got home - I work on 41st & park. We had to evacuate our building. We had no idea what was going on....when we got outside we started RUNNING LIKE MAD ANIMALS west.....I was with my coworker thankfully. We were holding hands while running. It was insane....I ended up waiting for an express bus to Queens and 2 hrs later, I am home. I dont know if my office will even be open tomorrow.

I think its just hitting me now...I am starting to get upset...it was hard because when we were running we didnt know if it was terrorist related yet. Kinda like we were running for our lives....

Re: Was anyone near the steam pipe explosion...

I work on 42nd and Lex and my office looks down towards Lex. I heard the noise and looked out of my window and saw the cloud of black smoke.

Everyone in my office started screaming and we all left the building and started running.

It was honestly very scary because we had no idea what was going on.

I didn't hear about this until I just watched the news...and my gosh, the pictures take me back 6 years...what a deja vu flashback of all the people running with the plume of smoke... so scary... I'm glad you're all OK!
