Re: Camping on Long Island
My DH took his son and a friend to Hither Hills in Montauk where you camp on the beach. He said it was beautiful.

I don't know if they have tent camping, but some of my friends go to Battle Row in Bethpage.

You have to reserve these a year in advance though.
I used to work for the parks out there
ETA: You also don't camp ON the beach, you camp next to it.

Re: Camping on Long Island
We've camped at Cedar Point in East Hampton.
You can drive up to each site with your car and pitch the tents there. The site has public bathrooms and showers also.

Eastern Long Island Kampground. In Greenport. Been going there for years! They have tent and trailer camping and the village of Greenport is awesome.

Suffolk County Parks
Click on the Parks link to get to the listing of individual parks. I used to work at Smith Point and Southaven when I was in high school and college. I've been camping at almost every county park that has camping.

Re: Camping on Long Island
I will definitely look into all of these. Are you required to have a green key to go to the camp grounds?

I 2nd Hither Hills (although reservations are required and they used to do a lottery type system as well) its clean, beautiful, and lots of fun!!
Eastern LI Kampgrounds is also very good! Very close to beautiful local beaches, great restaurants, and the town of Greenport!

Re: Camping on Long Island
We grew up camping at Wildwood State park in wading river. We camped in both tents and pop up trailers. The tent site have water every few sites and restrooms with showers scatters thoughout the grounds. It used to be cool to be able to walk to the beach through the trails and you are able to go surf fishing or swimming from the beach. There are also playgrounds on the grounds. There are lots of local farms to go shopping and the riverhead outlets arnt too far for a raining day.
Havnt been there in probally 15yrs but we used to love going there.
