You're from LI?

What kind of impression do you think people have of LI? Not just from an out of town perspective but from a NYC perspective?

Re: You're from LI?

I think the perception is that LI'ers live 20 miles away from the greatest city in the world and never visit. I also think that Long Island never changes, it's always the same.

I remember when I went away to college and would come home for breaks and think to myself "this place is like Brigadoon--frozen in time"

I agree. When I went to school in RI, everyone thought I lived minutes away from NYC..lol..

Amy Fisher, Joey Buffafuco- we have all the winners here

I was just down south and to them we are pretty much all "yankees" and we over heard a waitress telling a table that being called "yankee" was the biggest insult ever

I can't wait to move down there- Jake and I were already thinking of personal Lic Plates we can get Chat Icon

From out of state people: that it is small. When I lived out of state and told people I was from LI, some would say, "Oh I have a friend who lives on Long Island...." and for a brief minute would think I might actually know the person Chat Icon

I agree with these misconceptions. Especially the first two.

I was so afraid when meeting DH's upstate family they would assume I was rich and snobby because I was from LI... I think they still think that my family has a lot of money. Which we don't.

Re: You're from LI?

I was out partying in Fire Island one time a while ago and one of the girls I was talking to asked me where I live. I told her LI and she is from the city.

She said, she thought that only old people live in LI.

I think that's just the north shore perception.

I think there is a very big difference with how people view the north shore vs. south shore and nassau vs. suffolk.

When I first moved here that became immediately apparent to me. Fair or not.

Re: You're from LI?

living out of state and getting LI comments all the time -

i think they think amy fisher/joey buttafuco types

they think everyone talks with a thick "long gisland" accent and never believe me that i grew up there my whole life bc i don't have one

that people are glitzy and showy and materialistic

i know no differences between north shore vs south or suffolk vs nassua to be honest. mainly becaus ei havent spent enough time in each.
so, i think someone who has never been to LI wouldnt know the differences either.

I think thats the LI view of LI, not the outsiders view of Long Island. To out of towners, long island is long island, it doesn't matter where on the island you are, its all the same.

Re: You're from LI?

When I was younger every time I visited my cousins, who all live in suffolk, I always thought it was so "country." Like then houses far apart, can't walk anywhere, no deli on the corner, etc.

I also think it's funny when they say they are "coming into the city" meaning they are coming to Queens.Chat Icon

Right, but her question was how do you think people from NYC view LI and I think they are close enough to know that.

At least in my experience.

Plus, I grew up in Delaware and worked at the beach every summer. We may not have known "shores" but we definitely knew there were two types of Long Islanders.

i disagree. i dont think people in the city would know the difference. i htink its mainly a LI'ers view.

unless you've been to those places, you wouldnt know.

That we all say, "Longh Guyland".
The only people that I have ever heard say that, are the people that are assuming Long Islanders say that.

Re: You're from LI?

I'm from the Midwest. My stereotype of Long Island was that everyone was rich (a lot of old money) and had that accent everyone talks about.

And when I came here, I found that not everyone is rich. However, there is a lot more money here than where I came from. And it does show - there are a lot more high-end vehicles on the road and a lot more luxury brand stores. Even with the higher cost of living, a lot of people can still afford those items.

(ETA: I was just reminded of the wedding costs and how much people give as wedding gifts... That's unheard of in the majority of the country. Why wouldn't the rest of the country think LI was rich?)

I always thought the more Eastern end of LI would be full of mansions, etc. When we were looking to buy a home, we saw we could get more bang for our buck out there, with the exception of a few towns. Eastern LI is more like the Midwest.

ETA: I didn't know about the South shore / North shore thing until my DH was filled in on it by his co-workers.

Re: You're from LI?

My husband grew up in Brooklyn and had never been to LI before he met me. One day, we drove by Cafe Royale in Farmingdale and I told him there was a strip club in the back.

His shock was hilarious. He didn't believe that there were "seedy" strip clubs on LI. He honestly thought it was all suburban families, and that husbands didn't go to strip clubs.

After I laughed my @ss off, I decided to make it my mission to show him that all his perceptions of LI were wrong. He has a much better idea of the diversity of LI now.

I have lived out of state and most people know that the island exists but don't know that there are city-like neighborhoods to farms here. Or that there are two counties. Or that it takes hours to drive from one end to the other.

And yes, that "Lawn-Guyland" thing is annoying. Although my accent is dreadful, I don't pronounce it that way. And I've never heard anyone that does.
