Pediatrician

UH OH

In the haze of all thats been happening, I just realized I never choose a pediatrician.

Now if I dont have the baby in the next 2 weeks, I wont be on bedrest and can probably meet with one, But the possibility of getting an appointment before birth is slim.

What do I do after he is born if I dont have one???

I cannot believe I didnt do this earlier.

What area are you in? Maybe ask on parenting for some recommendations, and then call the office, explain that you are on strict bedrest and would like to do the interview over the phone. I'm sure they are used to these types of situations. Chat Icon

Re: Pediatrician

My OB gave me list of Pediatricians that he recommends. Perhaps your OB has one too

Re: Pediatrician

I work for a ped. You don't necessarily have to meet with the Dr before the baby is born, actually most parents don't. BUT, when you check into the hospital they will ask who your ped. is so that they can visit you and the baby in the hospital. If you son't have one, one of the on staff peds will see the baby, but that will only buy you so much time because you'll need to bring the baby to see his/her own Dr. at about 1 week old.

Re: Pediatrician

Honestly, I didn't interview or really pick a pediatrician before Ava was born. I didn't really see how I could until I actually had the baby, so I just went with someone on my SIL's recommendation and then said I'd switch if it didn't work out. I didn't end up liking the ped. after about a month, so I switched and knew more what to look for.
I honestly wouldn't worry at this point. Maybe just give the hospital a call and make sure the pediatricians there take your insurance. If they do, then I wouldn't worry until after the baby's born.
I say to call the hospital and ask about ins. because I know a few people who had hospital pediatricians check out their DC, and they were never informed that they might not take their ins.

What town are you looking for a ped. in? Maybe the girls here can tell you who they use so you can just go on a recommendation for now, and do what I did if you don't like them?

What town do you live in?
Maybe ask your OB or friends/family for recommendations.
My practice is good, but they are located in Pt Jeff Station and Wading River...and they have rights at St Charles and Stony Brook...not wure where you are...?

Im in Lindenhurst.

DO I have to like Call the Dr and ask them to become the pediatrician? I am fine with reccomendation alone now ( I have 7 nephews who use Drs in our area)....But how do I go about "assigning " a dr?

Re: Pediatrician

Nope, you don't need to ask the Dr or speak with them at all. Just tell the hospital when you sign in who you are using, and as soon as the baby is born, they'll call that practice and the ped will come see you and the baby the following morning

But afterwards, when you need to see a Dr. That first week or what not.

I can just call a recommended Dr. and make an appointment??

Sorry to sound so dumb about it.

I would just call the pediatrician and make sure they are accepting new patients, let them know you are having a baby and when yourdue date is. Then when you go to the hospital to deliver let the nurses know who you have chosen for your pediatrician, if they are affiliated with the hopsital they will come check out the baby when he/she is born.

..and even if you don't get a ped before the baby is born, you can still see the staff doctor for the follow up visit at their office. They all have offices outside of the hospital. Emma saw the staff doctor in the hospital and the follow ups have been with the staff doctor at her practice, which I really like it turns out so we'll just stay with them.

Re: Pediatrician

You don't need a ped before delivery. You can use the ped staff of the hospital. BUT you will need to get a ped when you come home.

I was told by a ped to see a ped within 2-3 days after being released.

If you don't pick a ped before you deliver:

- check a ped in your area/the recommendation you have and see if they carry your insurance
- ask if they take new patients
- Ask them how to processed on setting up an appt after you are released since you usually have to do it within 1 week.

Re: Pediatrician

I delivered my DS almost 4 weeks early and I didn't have a pediatrician picked. When I got there they asked me who my ped was and I told the nurse I hadn't picked one yet, cause I had just gone out of work and was planning on doing it in my 4 weeks off! She gave me a recommendation for a dr. in Seaford and she wrote that on my paperwork, although it could have stayed blank and they would have let the hospital dr. see him.

My DS ended up in the NICU so only the neonatologists see him, so when he was released I called the office--told them I had a new baby and was referred to their office. They asked me a few questions and gave me an appt for the next day. So I am sure it will be similar if you deliver at a hospital the dr. doesn't work at.
