Has anyone ever heard of this....

I had an appt on Thursday to get my level 2 results and needless to say it wasn't the best appt!

The dr told us that the radiologist says that one of his kidneys is dilated and they don't really know what it is or what's causing it. Could be a blockage, could be the urethra is too short and can't drain, could be nothing at all... no one has answers for me.

These answers didn't really make me feel to great and I've been a nervous wreck.. We have to go back for a follow up evaluation in 4 weeks and hopefully have some better answers.

Has anyone ever heard or experienced this? I'm 21weeks.

Sorry this is a little long

Re: Has anyone ever heard of this....

Before we found out that we were expecting a girl my Dr. spoke to us about circumcision should we have a boy. She said that she does not perform the circumcision if the baby is not 100% healthy. She went on to say that as many as 45-50% of baby boys can have dilated kidneys when born and although that can be only a minor issue she wouldn't do it.

I don't know anyone personally that had this issue but the way she spoke about it, it didn't seem major. I'd call to ask more about it once you've had the chance to do some research. Ask about what complications may arise but again it didn't seem that bad the way she spoke about it.

Re: Has anyone ever heard of this....

I have not heard specifically about dilated kidneys, but our friend's baby was found to have a tumor in his stomach on these sonograms. Once he was born, they couldn't find it.

I have heard many babies that they find something abnormal, but then everything is fine when the baby is born. Sometimes this extra technology makes it harder for us to breathe as expecting parents.

I wouldnt worry to to to much about it. My friend is a sonogram tech and he says that you would be surprised how many mistakes get made.

The sonogram is only as good as the tech doing the scan..and then the doctor has to review the scan..and there can be a lot lost in translation.

His recommendation is always to have a perinatalogist have a look at the baby should a problem arise.

Re: Has anyone ever heard of this....

Please don't worry too much. Although I don't have the answers, I will tell you that when my sister was pregnant they found a lot of fluid in my nephew's kidneys and they were a bit swollen. They had her CONVINCED something was wrong with him. And she worried for months and months.

Well... there wasn't anything wrong and he was born perfect.

SO... I just want you to not worry, which is easy for all of us to say, but JUST because something "shows up" does not mean something's wrong.

You must try to stay positive Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I really think that Dr.'s shouldn't say anything unless they're 100% positive!!!!

They had told me that my little girl *MIGHT* have a cleft lip &/or palate at my 20 week sono. It was a holiday weekend and we couldn't go back until after the holiday. I worried and cried and worried and didn't sleep all weekend. They couldn't really tell b/c the cord was in front of her face. We went back, and all was fine. (Except the cysts near her brain which are supposedly normal).

My advice is- harder said than done- is not to worry!!! I'm sure there is nothing wrong, but they're covering themselves in case b/c they can't tell. Rather than simply say, come back b/c we can't tell yet, they tell you what MIGHT be and freak you out!

My prayers are w/ you and your little one growing!!!! Chat Icon

Re: Has anyone ever heard of this....

I recently found out I had an infected and blocked kidney after I gave birth to my DD last May. Turns out that what I had is actually something you are born with (its congenital) and that I lived with it for so long with no problems. Nowadays, they can find out this problem in utero and a fix is no problem (the spot at the kidney where it drains to the ureter is blocked).

What I do know about it is that its such an easy fix, if it does turn out that something is wrong. Please don't worry about it! More often than not, they are born and its nothing! Keep ius updated. Chat Icon
