MY BIRTH STORY......(VERY VERY LONG)

I had quite the experience with labor. I think it goes a lot smoother for most people. The Monday before I gave birth I wound up going to my dr. b/c I was leaking fluid. I went into her office for her to check me and she sent me to the hospital. I was at the hospital for several hours and of course they discharged me b/c I stopped leaking. Apparently that can happen. My dr. told me to walk, have sex and eat Chinese food b/c it seems like my little guy didn’t want to come out.

The following Saturday, DH felt like Chinese food. We ate dinner around 5 and I started having contractions at 7. Whether it was from the Chinese food, I don’t know, but I still thought it was kind of funny. My contractions were originally 12 min. apart and than they slowly moved closer together. By 12 midnight they were 4 min. apart. I called my dr’s office and of course NONE of my dr’s were on call. (You may all remember my 100 posts about this). My dr’s emergency service referred me to another dr’s office who I guess they work with. I called this dr. several times and finally after the 3rd call he called me back. I told him I had bloody show and my contractions were 4 min. apart. He told me to go to the hospital. So DH and I grab my suit case and go to the hospital. We get there around 2 in the morning. They hook me up to the machines and my contractions around even closer together now. I figure the dr is going to come in and check me, I WAS WRONG! He wasn’t even there. The nurse comes in and checks me. She told me I was only about 1 ½ cm dilated. So, I stay hooked up to the machines until around 9 when they finally tell me to get up and walk around b/c I still was not dilating although my contractions were closer together. The dr. comes in around 10 to check me. I am still only 1 ½ cm. dilated so HE SENDS ME HOME! He tells me he knows he will see me back there later that night, but I should go home and eat and sleep and to call him when I feel like the contractions are knocking the wind out of me. I was furious, DH was furious. Besides the fact, they wheel me into labor and delivery but they let me walk out. I had 4 contractions on the way out to the car where I had to stop, lean up against the wall and wait for the contractions to pass. So I get home, try to eat something, take a shower and fall asleep. Oddly enough, the contractions started to separate a little more and got weaker. So I was a little upset needless to say. But they didn’t stay that way for long. Around 9 Sunday night, they started up again. This time stronger than last night. I waited for them to get to almost 2 min. apart before calling the dr. My husband called and of course the same dr. from the night before was on call from the other dr’s office. The dr. told DH to bring me back to the hospital. DH told the dr. that if I come back to the hospital I am not leaving until I give birth. The dr. said he would not send me home again. So, we truck back to the hospital around 3 early Monday morning. The dr. of course isn’t there, just the nurses again. The nurse checks me and I am still only 1 ½ cm. dilated. The nurses seemed a little ******, but couldn’t understand how my contractions could be so strong and so close together. They called the dr. and the dr. told them to give me Stadol to help relax me and maybe I would dilate. I didn’t want it at first but around 5 a.m. I broke down b/c I was so exhausted at this point. I fell asleep for a couple of hours and when I woke up I was 5 cm. dilated. I was so happy! It was now past 8 so a new dr. was on call. I figured being it was Monday morning at 8 a dr. from my office would now be there, I was wrong again. It was another dr. from the other office. I was so ******. So noone from my office was on call Saturday, Sunday or Monday. What is the point of going to a practice with 6 dr’s than???? Anyway, this new dr. (who I loved by the way) showed up to check me and confirmed I was 5 cm dilated. She said she would be back in a few hours to check me. By this point I was doubled over in pain and not dilating as quickly as I or the dr. had hoped. The nurse I had during this shift was AMAZING. She finally talked me into getting the epidural which I had sworn I would not get at 5 Monday night when I was still only 6 cm. dilated. So by this point I had been in labor for almost 48 hrs. I was tired and starting to break down. They didn’t want to give me anything else b/c they said it effects the baby at this point, so the epidural was the safest bet. The anesthesiologist came in and I asked him 101 questions, including if I can be paralyzed, if I can be numb forever, blah blah blah. He was great. He must have thought I was a nut. He promised me nothing would happen. It was done in probably less than 10 min. It was the best thing I ever did. It feels like a cross of when you go to the dentist and your lips are numb, kind of puffy and when your legs fall asleep. It took a short time to kick in. I definitely needed it just for the rest alone being I was in labor for so long. I fell asleep for a couple of hours and around 7 a new nurse was on duty. She checked me and told me the dr. was back and that we were going to start pushing shortly. She tested my pushing with the epidural and of course I wasn’t doing to good being I couldn’t really feel my muscles so they turned off the epidural. Within 30 min. almost all the feeling was back in my legs and I felt EVERYTHING. But it was different at this point b/c the baby was coming down and I just felt like I had to push, and it felt good to push. I started pushing at 8:00 and my baby boy was born 2 ½ hrs later at 10:30. YES, I pushed for 2 ½ hrs. It took awhile for me to figure out how to push and than when I did he just was being stubborn. His little head kept popping out than going back inside. Finally I was screaming at the dr. to just get him out. She laughed and was like one more big push. I pushed and he flew out. The dr. and nurse were amazing. My husband was amazing and my mom was in the room with me also. At first I didn’t want her in with me but by the time I was delivering I didn’t care who was in there. I needed all the support I could get. They didn’t give him to me right away though b/c they had to suction him b/c he released meconium (sp?) during delivery. He was fine though. I also starting bleeding very heavily and I ripped so they had to stitch me up. Finally after 30 min. they gave him to me to hold and I was in love.

Tyler Joseph was born April 2nd (on my exact due date and on my dad’s birthday) at 10:30 p.m. He was 8 lbs 6 oz and I am totally in love. I never realized I could love another human being as much as I love him.

I delivered at South Nassau in Oceanside. The rooms are beautiful being they just built the new maternity wing. The nursing staff is great as well, at least the nurses I had. The nursery is great. They took great care of my little guy and great care of me. I was pretty beat up after labor. They were very attentive and if I needed help they were there within seconds. One thing I realized is that the nurses do 95% of the work during labor and delivery. The dr's are really just there to catch the baby when they pop out. Nurses should be given more credit b/c they were their butts off.

Congrats...that is quite a story! I hope you are going to complain to your Dr's about how none of them were on call for three days straight...that is really upsetting! Regardless, at least your baby is here and is healthy!
