Re: Medford

unfortuneatly the area between LIE & Sunrise is the not so nice section of Medford. Pat-Med is an ok school, very middle of the road in my opinions.

Re: Medford

Actually, I think it's the area above the LIE that is the not-so-nice section.

That might be because I live in the section between the LIE and Sunrise Hwy. Our development is adorable and the neighbors are fantastic.

When I was looking in Patchogue and Medford, I was advised to stay south of the LIE.

I agree south of the LIE is very nice and quiet. North of the LIE you are starting to get near some of the Gordon Heights areas. But south of the LIE is quiet and nice size properties

Re: Medford

Here's my two cents. Eveyone is going to tell you different things about an area - for whatever reason people have their opions and prejudices about certain neighborhoods.

We have been looking in Medford and the area south of the LIE is nicer than north of the LIE in terms of lot size and just the overall look of the area. Stay away from Gordon Heights, its tied with Coram for the top area of sex offenders on LI.
We almost bought a house north of the LIE in eagle estates. It is a decent looking development which I have been told is going through revitilzation. There are lots of kids playing and its near an elementary school.

I would recommend driving through the areas you have in mind and see what you think for yourself. Look at the houses and how people take care of their property.

I would agree when we were looking in Medford the area between LIE and Sunrise was very nice. I especially loved the area they called Old Medford. The land plot were large and most of the houses were beautiful, and the streets are wide and tree lined.

Re: Medford

I was wondering about Medford too, because there are some VERY affordable houses there. We drove through a couple of neighborhoods south of the LIE that seems REALLY nice. However, I have gotten so many mixed reviews about the schools. I think any elementary is okay, but I know Pat. Med. high school is not so great. My coworkers kids go there, and I cant tell you how many times her kids have called her to pick them up because they are scared of a kid with a knife or something, they were on lockdown a couple of weeks ago. This is the only thing that scared me away, since we don't know how many years we will be living in our next house. This whole househunting thing is sooo frustrating. I have found awsome homes in Longwood school district too, but again, it's a sketchy district I guess.

I will say, I am sooo tired of everyone's opinions, but at the same time, glad that I have been steered away from some areas.

I can't believe the story with the knife in school! I knew it wasn't a great district but I didn't know it was that dangerous.... Definitely something to consider, thanks!

Re: Medford

Ok this is going to be everywhere you look. Being I was a graduate of Pat Med I never had a problem with the school I did graduate in 96. It is a huge school district so you are going to hear more of the rumors. But check out the area.

Re: Medford

So true...you always hear more of the bad stories than good. My boss's husband was the principal at Pat Med. high school for two years, he said it's middle of the road, there is Def. worse out there. I think if you find an area you like, you just go with it.

I'm looking at homes in Middle Country School District, lots of mixed reveiws there too, which is true with any big district.

I hope I didn't offend anyone with previous post, just wanted to let you know I am in the SAME debate boat with districts.

I was just talking to a girl that graduated from Longwood last year, and she said she really had no problems with the school, whereas so often I hear stay away! It's so hard when you are middle income I think, the balance between a nice home, and a nice area.

That can happen anywhere. I teach in a beloved district in Nassau county and I have personally taken away knives from 2 students in my classroom over the years. There have been guns brought to school and other things. I don't mean to sound nonchalant about it but it goes on in the best of neighborhoods as well as the worst.

As for Pat-Med school district. I student taught there back in 94-95. I do not think it's the worst school nor the best. The high school probably would not be my top choice mainly because it's on the state's list of schools not making the requirements set forth under the NCLB act. BUT having taught there met the students and seen how dedicated the staff is I think it gets a really bad rep because it is a very intergrated school and as we know on Long Island that is not always looked upon in a favorable way.

Like I said I work in a beloved school district on these boards. My school is 96% white. Do I think the teacher's are any better or the programs any better in my school then what I observed there. Actually probably not, our scores are about average but we do not have ESL kids and children living in poverty.

Just to clarify - lockdowns happen in all different schools, in all different areas. You hear about them all the time.

However, that being said,I live in Medford and actually am not sure if I want to buy a house here or not. My DH grew up here, and the area is by no means bad (we live south of the LIE) the area north of the LIE is where most of the affordable houses are. Eagle Estates has an awful reputation, but does have some great starter homes that are affordable. I think the area is changing a little bc the houses are affordable. You are getting more young couples who are starting out. Gordon Heights is an area that I would certainly not even consider. The parts of Medford south of the LIE are nice.

All in all, I have had no problems living here - it is close to both Sunrise and LIE, and there are tons of stores within just a few miles. It is fairly close to the water too. All pluses in my opinion.

I went to Smithtown which is considered a safe/good school, and we had a stabbing in our school. It could happen anywhere.

Re: Medford

We originally wanted to stay in West Islip, where we both grew up. It comes down to what you can get for your $$. For our price range we can get something old that needs updating in west islip or new construction in medford area. We will have to consider everything...

Very true. I am in the "famed" Sachem School District and I could tell you stories from when my girls went there that would curl your hair. Do your own research and go through all the neighborhoods that interest you at all times of the day and at night and, if possible, talk to some of the people that live there. All neighborhoods have good and bad points.

Re: Medford

knives in schools(unfortunatly) are nothing new. I went to Comsewoque in the 80's & we had "racial riots" as the district called them & kids got caught with knives & drugs frequently. When we wanted the "good drugs" we left our school & went to Ward Melville because those kids had a little more money & better stuff.
My son graduated from Connetquot in 2005 & there were weapons & drugs in school there too. A handful of kids that should have graduated with my son missed it because they were in rehab.

This is the society we live in, and I've said it before & I'll say it again, a school district no matter how good its reputation doesn't guarentee you a well educated or clean cut kid, only super involved parents & a lot of teamwork from the parents & the school can.

As for Medford, I think its a decent middle class area w/a few spots that are more appealing than others.

Re: Medford

I completely agree that it is best to check out the area and schools on your own. Go into the schools and take a look around.

As for the knife thing, it is quite common now days but something schools don't take lightly. We recently had 2 boys who were Boy Scouts bring pocket knives to school. They are good kids but got in trouble because they brought the knife to school.

We have lived here for almost two years and we really love it. Our neighbors are extremely nice and friendly and most of the houses are well taken care of. A lot of the houses are totally redone and while there are some "dumps", I think that's true of every neighborhood.
As another poster said, drive around the neighborhood at various times and see if YOU like it. Everyone else has an opinion that may not agree with yours. We bought our house here cuz it was affordable, there's a great park four blocks away, the elementary school is extremely close and we talked to some of the neighbors before we bought and liked them, so we ended up looking at a lot of houses in the development before we bought ours.
