DH lived just south of the LIE and just North of Sunrise his whole life (until we got married). There are parts of Medford that are very nice. His neighborhood was quiet and no crime.

Here's my two cents. Eveyone is going to tell you different things about an area - for whatever reason people have their opions and prejudices about certain neighborhoods.
We have been looking in Medford and the area south of the LIE is nicer than north of the LIE in terms of lot size and just the overall look of the area. Stay away from Gordon Heights, its tied with Coram for the top area of sex offenders on LI.
We almost bought a house north of the LIE in eagle estates. It is a decent looking development which I have been told is going through revitilzation. There are lots of kids playing and its near an elementary school.
I would recommend driving through the areas you have in mind and see what you think for yourself. Look at the houses and how people take care of their property.
We almost bought in Eagle Estates too!!! We thought the houses were nice, the land sizes were good, and the people were nice in the neighborhood. As for the schools, I think that no matter what disctrict you go into, there will always be stories. I gotta admit that kids these days do way more then when I was a kid...or at least, they are getting caught more often. I work with troubled teens in a residential treatment center (they are sent to me through the courts after catching charges) and they come from all parts of Long Island (lots from Suffolk). The problems that we see aren't just in financially struggling districts or schools with a "bad reputation". I have tons of kids that come from some of the most wealthy school districts on the Island. I think as long as you raise your child right with good morals and values, and they know who to stay away from, you are all set!!!
