How do you (safely) clean your carpets?
With the recent death of John Travoltas son and all the talk of kawasaki disease and it being caused by chemicals in a carpet cleaner....I apologize if I'm getting that wrong...
It got me thinking...
How do you *safely* clean your carpets?

Re: How do you (safely) clean your carpets?
You know not to scare anyone but DD had Kawasaki disease in the summer and she was hospitalized for it. I posted back in July....and now that I think about it she got sick one day after we came from spending a day at my cousins house. My cousin has carpet and also has a carpet cleaning business and her DH is constantly cleaning their carpets...It makes me wonder......
ETA: My Mom also has carpet and cleans it frequently and DD is always at my Mom's...so I don't know if there is a true link between carpet cleaning and Kawasaki..but it does make me wonder.

Kawasaki Disease is a rare disease that usually affects kids under 5 (usually boys and usually Asian). It causes rashes and high fevers and can closely mimic Coxsacie. If not treated timely it can cause inflammation of the heart (aneurysms) and it's actually the leading cause of heart disease in children.

I am not sure. At first, I thought steaming was great (as "natural") vs messy champooing and all venting the house to make sure it dries. but found out that they actually use chemical to steam carpets too.
I am going to replace our carpet with laminate but again not sure how "safe" those are. Maybe I will find a "low toxic/smell/green" wood laminate.

The chemicals in the carpet cleaners and I also believe something to do with mites (but don't quote me on that one...I *think* I read that somewhere)

My MIL has A LOT of chemical sensitivities...... She has her carpets steam cleaned with JUST WATER and it does the trick.... There are a few companies out there that will do just water, you have to make sure when they come to do it that you remind them that its supposed to be just water.

http://www.teragren.com sells bamboo flooring with no VOCs. It's probably the healthiest floor you can get. That's what I have in my office.

Re: How do you (safely) clean your carpets?
Based on researching sites of several leading medical journals, and Kawasaki disease sites, nobody is directly correlating carpet cleaning solution with the disease. Any of them that mention it, immediately follow the statement that it hasn't been proven, or it isn't more than circumstantial.
The reported cases show that very few siblings get it if another sibling has it. Since they all are on the same floor, it starts to put huge holes in the carpet cleaning theory.
Also, DC who get it and are cured, rarely get it again, which also puts serious doubts into the carpet cleaning connection.
Of all the countries in the world, is Japan really using chemical steam cleaners on carpet more than other countries?

Oh geez - I have an obsession with steam cleaning my carpets. We normally use the Bissel Carpet Cleaner and then do an entire once over with just water.
I'll have to do some research now - thanks for posting!

Re: How do you (safely) clean your carpets?
well, if you're concerned about kawasaki disease, the best thing to do is not steam clean your carpets at all... Your thread peaked my curiosity... so I looked it up.
Just like Crohn's disease, kawasaki is an autoimmune disease. All autoimmune diseases have both genetic and environmental components... The genetic components we can't help... we simply inherit them. the environmental components are seldom identified... One children's hospital believes kawasaki's may be associated with steam cleaning carpets and stagnant water bodies.
the latter part of that suggests it may be the wet carpet sitting around, rather than any particular chemical, that contributes towards kawasaki disease. maybe low levels of mold spores? who knows...
Personally, since we live with white wall to wall carpets ... we'll clean them, but less frequently than we did prior to eryk.

Unfortunately, I'm sure you could find other studies that show that carpet that ISN'T steam-cleaned often harbors other problems.
.... and many hardwoods off-gas poisonous chemicals.... natural stone emits radiation....
I'm just doing what I can within reason, and living my life without stressing over every thing that gets printed. There is nothing that we do that doesn't have some sort of downside to it.....

Re: How do you (safely) clean your carpets?
When we moved into our house last summer, I used a company called Eco-steam. It was supposed to be very eco friendly and not harmful. I would hope so because it was . I was thinking of having them come back after the winter to do our family room and possibly DD's room.

Re: How do you (safely) clean your carpets?
Chem-Dry--a little more expensive but well worth it. They steam with seltzer.
Natural Approach to Carpet Cleaning Chem-Dry carpet cleaners use The Natural, a proprietary hot water cleaning solution that uses the power of carbonation to lift dirt to the surface where our powerful suction tools whisk away the dirt - leaving carpets clean, deep below the surface. The PowerHead uses vortex suction to remove water and dirt for maximum cleaning effectiveness. And experts agree - the Chem-Dry system works hard to deep clean carpets without leaving dirt-attracting residues. In fact, the Carpet & Rug Institute has awarded Chem-Dry's hot carbonating extraction process with its Seal of Approval. Cleaning carpets with Chem-Dry routinely can help keep your carpet warranty in compliance.
