Birth Control after first baby?
So what did you all use? I haven't been brave enough to DTD yet since giving birth 7 weeks ago. I had to cancel my 6 week check up since I got AF and now I couldn't get a new appt until 8/31.
I was just curious what everyone used. I'm not a big fan of the pill or hormonal birth control... Has anyone used an IUD? Was it painful to get it put in? Any side effects?
Just curious about some options...

I am not on anything, sometimes condoms, sometimes pull and pray and sometimes hope it's not ovulation time.

Re: Birth Control after first baby?
I just got the paraguard IUD as I am aslo BF. I am not going to lie it hurt like a to get inserted, but I think it is b/c I never dialted and had a c-section. The pain didn't last too long, it felt like intense cramping more than pain. Just as I was thinking of telling the doctor forget it, no way, she said we were done. I prob only took a minute, felt longer for me. My doctor is very conservative and said if it wasn't going to go go in easy she wasn't going to push it. She said it went great. I had cramps that felt like strong AF cramps the rest of the afternoon. I took some tylenol right after the insertion, and then every 4 hours until I went to bed that night. By the next day I was fine. A little crampy here or there, but nothing that bad. The strings freaked me out the first time I felt them b/c they felt so stiff, but after a week they soften to the point you can't really feel them. I may go in to have them cut shorter, DH thinks he might have felt them the other day when we were DTD. I think it is his imagination so we will see. Even with the pain of insertion, I think it was worth it. I love not having to worry about birth control, it is good for 10 years, and can be taken out anytime. Also no hormones was big deal for me. They make me crazy, my body just can't handle them. If you have any other questions feel free to FM me.

This was our plan after DD, and is also the reason why I now have a 14 month old and a 1 month old. lol
My 6 week appt is next Monday and I'll probably end up going back on the pill.

Thanks! I know Mirena has hormones I think- so this one sounds good. I really don't want the hormones. Do you notice any spotting or anything in between periods? Do you still get regular periods with it?

I have the paraguard as well, I didn't think it was too terrible to get inserted just some cramping during and afterwards. I bled lightly for like a week after I got it then got AF a week after that and have been getting it consistantly every month (despite EBF ) sometimes 3.5 wks since. I have had spotting in between periods but I've had that for years since I have fibroids. My periods have also been pretty heavy but I do remember after DD#1 having a few heavy periods as well but I was on the mini-pill back then so part of it could be because of being PP. Not a fan of the heavy periods (I've always had light-moderate periods) and hoping it will get a little bitter, I'm almost at the 6mth mark since getting it so I'll make a decision at my 1yr check up if I want to keep it or pull it.

Re: Birth Control after first baby?
I got the Paraguard IUD back in March.
I was on BCP for about 10 years prior to DC and I didn't want to take hormones anymore.
The insertion of the IUD was not bad at all. I felt a little pinching, but it wasn't bad. I didn't really even spot after and if anything had mild cramping for a day.
I have now had 2 PP periods since it was inserted (I was BFing so it took a couple months for AF to return).
I will not lie, the first period was the heaviest I have ever had in my entire life. I swear it lasted 10 days and I was bleeding through super plus tampons in an hour and a half.
My second PP period was a little better. Still lasted a week, but I only had about 2 days of heavy bleeding and it wasn't as heavy as the first.
I told DH that I am going to give it a year. I know that one of the side effects of the Paraguard can be heavier periods, but I'm sure my heavy periods could also be attributed to the post pardum aspect of it. So I will give it a year and if it is still super heavy and long, I will have it removed and DH can go get snipped!
For now, I am happy with it. DH said he could feel the string the first time, but hasn't felt it since!
Let me know if you have any questions!

My AF has been wacky since I had dd, b/c I she was in the NICU and I was pumping, and they wanted her supplemented for a bit. Then I started EBF, so I think that it threw everything off. I would assume you would have regular AF w/ it, b/c no hormones. I have only had the paraguard for a week so I am not sure if I will have spotting between. So far only bleed heavy the day of insertion, and the day or two after. Then some light bleeding a day or two then nothing. I do know some ppl deal w/ this for a bit after they get it. Also possible to have longer, heavier periods. I am willing to tough it out, I figure 3-4 months after insertion all that will adjust.

I remember your answer! I think I had asked it on Pregnancy too before I had my DD. Can you tell this has been on my mind for a while? Having a newborn is truly the best BC for me, you are right. I'm scared shytless to have sex anymore for fear of having another newborn! I can't take 2 of her!

Yeah I think the heavy periods can be due to being PP. My first period PP was INSANE. I really thought something was wrong with me. So I can't imagine having it be any heavier with the IUD- that scares me a bit!

Re: Birth Control after first baby?
I just got my first PP period last week and I am trying NuvaRing.
The first day or so it was a PITA bc it kept coming out with my tampon but now it's ok and hasn't come out. I figure I'll see how it goes for a month or 2 and if I don't like it I will get Mirena or Paraguard.

Re: Birth Control after first baby?
I never had any problems with horomones so I got the Mirena. I just didn't want to have to think about taking a pill every day. I didn't like the idea of copper with the paraguard so I got the Mirena. The hormones are very minimal. No where near as much as taking the pill.
DS was born in Dec 08 and I got the Mirena in March 09. It wasn't too painful and only my 1st period after insertion was heavy. Each period after that got lighter and lighter until Nov 09. That was my last period. I have had light spotting 2x since then. I LOVE it!!!!

What she said, word for word
They say it's less painful if you have it inserted after you've given birth and while you have your AF.
Loved having it and plan on doing it again after this baby if I don't get my tubes tied....
