Calling a spade a spade is a racist slur.

FYI.. The word Spade was used as racial slur but the actual phrase "calling a spade a spade" was around way before and has no racist connotation to it.

Thank you. I just came on to post this.

  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Call_a_spade_a_spade
It actually originated in the 1st Century, and was introduced to the English language in 1542.
I didn't know the history of the saying until just now.

It doesn’t matter when it was introduced. It isn’t acceptable now. I mean ‘retard’ was acceptable years ago and no one says that anymore.

The word Spade hasn't been thrown out the english dictionary. So you don't ever use the word spade or play cards? I feel like this is reaching.
Can we not say the phrase "Monkeying around" as well?

No, it isn’t reaching. ‘Retard’ hasn’t been thrown out of the dictionary as well.
I don’t think ‘monkey’ would qualify. I’m pretty sure the racist term is ‘ape’. Big difference.
  Even ‘duh’ is considered rude.

Retard is not the same as "spade is a spade" and not a fair comparison. Monkey has also been known to be used as a racial slur especially referring to sports players, so it is the same as the Spade example. So no, it's not only Ape.
I am not even going to go there with "Duh".

I’ve only heard ape being used, not monkey.

I've never heard Spade used as a slur, however, doesn't make it less true. Monkey has been a very common racial slur used, more so then spade. I actually feel like Spade is very outdated & hardly used.

I apologize if anyone took offense to my use of that particular idiom. I did not mean it to be derogatory in any way.

I don't think anyone thought that, it's nice of you to apologize but so unnecessary. The facts weren't even correct in the original statement calling the phrase racial.
It has no racial derivative and people may avoid it to make sure because of the history the word Spade, but in NO WAY is it a racial phrase.

It actually is becoming a racial phrase. I mean come on. It’s basically saying call a (insert your word that I won’t type out) a (again insert the word that no one will say).
It’s basically saying call a black person a black person. It’s derogatory and even if it is used on an idiom, the sentiment remains the same.

Mmm okay, sounds legit. Thanks for sharing.

he supermarket and randomly spouting out HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY BEAUTIFUL, KIND, AND INTELLIGENT DAUGHTER! WE ARE SO PROUD OF THE YOUNG WOMAN YOU’VE BECOME!

so F'D up and I dont understand this either.

  What?

LOL, i meant I agree with that part of the post. It sounds stupid when people post a shout out on FB, such as

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY BEAUTIFUL, KIND, AND INTELLIGENT DAUGHTER! WE ARE SO PROUD OF THE YOUNG WOMAN YOU’VE BECOME "

So what do you think social media should be used for. Genuinely curious

I don’t think it should be used. In my opinion, for a majority of people, it causes more harm than good.
I have a profile that I use to access local buy/sell groups. But I have no personal info, photos, etc.

I agree, it is very damaging for many people, kids and teens alike. Teen are able to meet people outside their neighborhood and its not always for good. People post the best pictures of themselves many times (NOT always), pretending to be happier then what is really going on inside the home or relationships.
I know some people who cant stop with selfies because something is missing from within. I know of someone who almost everyday talks about how blessed she to have her amazing husband and posts all the gifts he buys her, from very high priced stores, and her kids etc.... she posts of how wonderful she is and the good deeds she does. UGH, to me it appears like she is in such need to be valuated.
I'm not sure many of these medias have a real place. I agree with 100%

Well language is changing and it shouldn’t be used anymore. There are many words that change meaning throughout time. Use caution as the article says.

That’s OK. I pointed it out because it is something that requires care when using that statement.
And not everything is offensive. It’s just the political climate that we are in that makes some people more on edge and attentive. (This paragraph is to the poster before you). I’m amazed how much people live in a bubble sometimes.

I love them. I posted a bunch of pictures of each of my kids on each day. Not because I'm following anyone, because I like showing off my kids. They're the light of my life and I love any excuse to share them. I'm comfortable enough in my skin to know I'm not a sheep just because I'm doing the same thing as many. When it's important to go against the crowd, I do.

I tried to let it die, but your last line! who is living in a bubble? I challenged what you wrote because it very inaccurate and makes no sense. I am the last one that is living in a bubble.. I dealt with direct racism, sexism, discrimination in many ways.
You didn't even know that Monkey has been used as discriminatory and inflammatory towards African Americans, and we live in a bubble?
Going by your logic.. a person who wants attention on social media and uses these holidays to brag, is calling a spade a spade. Therefore, calling a black person a person; which, mean we (as in "black ppl") like to post on social media for attention?? I didn't know that was a common stereo type. I never heard this phrase used to enforce a Stereo Type or enforce racism, it doesn't even make sense.
Saying "I have the Itis" --> racial and stereotypical phrase.
Someone telling me "Are you here to work in the kitchen?" --> Racial, Stereotypical

I said people in general. I was referring to how someone said people are too sensitive these days. If I am called out on something that isn’t appropriate, then I’ll think twice about it. It isn’t that hard.
As for your comments on racial phrases, then I will take that into consideration and learn from it. There are things I don’t know, but I’m not going to ignore certain phrases because some people think everything has become too PC.

 National
And I have to laugh because in the related topics, Nervous Nell has been a thread starter for National Days twice. They must really annoy her.

Yes I see that too! And yes, it's super annoying to me.
I need to get off Facebook but I do use it for community groups and school groups.

Lol and I’m the opposite.. I hate the community & school groups! I use it to post pics, statuses and read funny memes and watch clips of Friends. Probably why I gravitate to IG more but keeps FB to stay connected to my family.
Btw.. National Sons day was going on for like 3 days. I totally thought of you. I don’t think anyone knew the actual day.

  LOL! See! I told you!

Oh and, I also use Facebook to see Emmer post new styles and spend hundreds of dollars on clothes. So yeah... I'd probably have a lot more money in the bank too if i got rid of the damn thing!!

 Re: National "whatever" Days
of course, i immediately thought of you all and this thread...
i just got an email at work, from "perks at work" letting me know that today is "National Handbag Day."
so, through one of the discount programs my employer participates in... i can save up to 50% if i buy a handbag through them, plus i get up to 4 times the usual points.
there really is a day for everything
