Kids going away with grandparents

So talk me off of the ledge...my kids (11, 9, 5) are going away with my in-laws for the first time...they have never gone anywhere out of Suffolk County without one of us before...we didn't choose to do this, but sort of needed to as we have a wedding out of state and they were willing to take them with them to Lake George for the weekend. I've left them before for short trips (4 days to Vegas) and with my husband last summer when I went on to a work conference for a week, but with this, I am totally panicking...anyone ever have their children go away without them? Tell me it was all ok!

Re: Kids going away with grandparents

I’m the grandparent, and I just recently took my grandson who is 6 away with me. We were gone for 3 nights. He was great, and we all had a good time. Your kids will be fine, go to the wedding and enjoy!

Kids going away with grandparents

My parents won't watch my DD while I run to the mailbox, but my grandmother used to take me on multiple trips a year. I think we started going when I was about 5. We both had a blast and some of my best memories are from those trips.

Thanks ladies! I needed to hear something positive...I'm not super over-protective, but for some reason, the kids going away without me makes me so nervous!

I think being that your kids are a little older and it is a very very easy family friendly destination they should all be fine .

This!!! same with my in laws.... so you and the kids are very lucky that the grandparents offered, and it will be awesome memories for all of them!! I think if your kids were a little younger, I would be more worried- but since they are "older", everything should be great Chat Icon ENJOY the wedding, and some time "off"!!!! Chat Icon

We are very lucky...I just sent them off with grandma and grandpa and they handled it ok...me, I'm worried as heck, but I know they will have a great time with them and visiting with their cousins.

Try to calm down and relax. Breathe. Your kids will have an amazing time and it's such great memories. Plus they are driving and not flying anywhere. So its pretty much the same as if they were home watching them, except this is more fun for everyone.

Enjoy your free time with your DH and now you can be guilt free because your kids will be on a vacation while you are away.

This is not to throw guilt or diminish your feelings but my son nor my nieces have any grandparents - like on either side. It's a little sad sometimes. So its good that your kids will have these memories.

Plus take all the help you can get girl!!Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Kids going away with grandparents

DS was 6 when my parents and brother took him to DR for 7 days, 6 nights. They spoiled him rotten, he had pina coladas (virgin of course) with every meal, got to swim with dolphins, and chillaxed in the pool all day. It was the best trip he's ever been on!

With that said, I trust my parents and my brother with his safety and know that while he will be spoiled he will also be safe and comfortable. I would not let my in-laws take him anywhere without my DH.

if you know your kids will be safe and happy, let them enjpoy their time with the grandparents. those memories are worth so much!
