I guess I can read up on it myself but why is Tamiflu so bad? And I dont mean as a preventive measure but to give to a child who HAS the flu? Just curious that’s all. TIA
There have been some very scary side effects reported more so in children than adults. Things like seizures and very scary hallucinations.
The hallucinations are the scary part. I read about a boy trying to jump out a window the other day.
I just want to add to my comment about the "Genexa Flu Fix" medicine. My niece was exposed to someone that was in her home with the flu on Monday (the girl didn't know she had the flu until later that night). By Wednesday my niece had a fever, aches, etc. Went to the doctor, tested neg...but...I think those tests are like the rapid strep, they aren't 100%, and after some research, I found that is true. I know with strep our rapid have always comes out neg, and the lab showed positive. But, she started taking the Flu Fix medicine yesterday morning and today she woke up feeling A LOT better. I bought myself a bottle just in case!
Is that similar to the Oscillococcinum? I heard great things about that too
I don’t understand Oscillococcinum. It’s basically a sugar pill and they sell it for over $1/pill which is completely outrageous. I can’t believe it actually does anything—though a lot of crunchy people I know swear by it
I've never bought it but I do know people swear by it. I believe the ingredients are natural anti virals. Similar to how elderberry has anti viral properties.

No.
I don't believe in it.
I give my children elderberry on a daily basis and a teaspoon of Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar in water. Knock on wood they have been pretty good so far. We will see what the rest of the winter holds in store.
I hate the winter!!! People who like this season are out of their burd

OMG LOL. So I just googled it because I was curious and I found this article on Forbes about it. Check this out:
Oscillo contains “Anas barbariae hepatis et cordis extractum 200CK.” Don’t be fooled by the Latin – it just means extract from the heart and liver of a duck. Yes, they kill ducks to make this stuff. The manufacturer then dilutes it to 200C, which in homeopath-speak means that 1 gram of extract is diluted to one part in 10400. Yes, that’s 10 raised to the power 400. Wow! The entire known universe has far fewer than 10400 molecules. If you filled the entire solar system with water, and mixed in one molecule of duck liver, it would be much more concentrated than this stuff. Oscillo is so diluted that there is essentially zero chance that even a single molecule of the original extract is in the product. The package does say that sugar is added to the pills, and that’s all they are: sugar pills.

Flu spinoff - Tamiflu
Eh.... definitely more than sugar in the flu fix. There's a whole list of ingredients. Homeopathic stuff is not for everyone though. I know for me when I take zinc or vitamin C instantly when I feel like I'm getting a cold it goes away. But yet science will tell you that it's just in your head. Big Pharma poo poos on anything natural. I was having severe gastritis, which is basically irritation in your stomach lining. I was prescribed so many different medicines and they all made it worse. I researched Manuka honey, and it's anti-biotic and healing properties. And guess what it worked. And guess what, the doctor said oh that stuff doesn't work.

LOL. Yeah I don't believe in most of the natural stuff but I HAVE significantly improved my migraines through supplements and vitamins. The meds for migraines are SCARY- they cause chest pains and tightening in your chest and warn they could cause heart attacks- so no way was I taking them. I would rather suffer with a migraine than risk it. But after some research I found CoQ10 and magnesium have been studied with success and it honestly has been like a miracle for me. And of course, my beloved IP6 supplements for immunity. I have not been sick in a LONG LONG time since taking it relgiously. But these things do have research behind them. They aren't duck hearts and livers diluted in the ocean!

There are definitely cures in nature. In foods, in your diet, in vitamins. Like i mentioned above, my migraines have responded wonderfully to supplements. It's just finding what works for you and your individual condition.
And it wont' work for everything. If you have an infection, you need antibiotics for example.

Flu spinoff - Tamiflu
I did a study on manuka honey years ago and it did show modest benefit for a very specific group of patients (not as an antibiotic). There is also legit evidence that zinc and vitamin c can ward off colds.
It’s the ridiculous things like homeopathy curing the flu or cancer or diabetes that gets me and I think it’s horrible advice for people who need real treatment (I’m NOT saying you did that at all, but other people do). And the woman who told me I had to believe for homeopathy to work- that’s not how you convince someone!

Re: Flu spinoff - Tamiflu
Thanks for the opinions. It's odd that it's such a hot topic with such a range of opinions, which is what was making me hesitate.
My son (who has the flu) has been taking it for 2 days now and has no side effects that I can see.
As for the hallucinations, the pediatrician did tell me about that but also said that there is no causal linkage or evidence that it is because of the Tamiflu, since the flu, itself, can cause those same symptoms.
So, night 1, when my son first had the fever (but had not taken the Tamiflu yet), he did have horrible night terrors, seeing things, etc., but did not have them the last 2 nights with the Tamiflu.
I'm going to wait with my daughter and just keep in on hand in case I start to see symptoms in my daughter rather than give it to her as a preventive measure.
I did buy her her own bottle of Purell!

Oh I strongly believe in Manuka Honey. I had strep...went to City MD...did a rapid, was neg. I started the honey right after, I had to fly out to see my dying Grandma the day after my CD MD visit. I was feeling SO much better, and my throat was not sore at all. A couple of days later I got a call from City MD that my culture was positive for strep throat. I was like 100% better at that point. I don't think strep clears up on it's own, so I definitely attribute it to the honey. Of course I still took the script they called in for me just in case though. It has also fixed my acid reflux issues immensely. I swear by that stuff.
And yes, some things are a bunch of BS, but there ARE certain things I strongly believe in because they have worked great for me.

Try to keep her separate, as mush as possible. My son always wants to hug and kiss me when I’m sick to make me feel better.. it’s so sweet but I have to remind him to say away. Lol

Re: Flu spinoff - Tamiflu
My son has the flu when he was about 3 - 4 years old. The doctor prescribed Tamiflu. First off it was so pricey, but it was about 3 years ago and didn't know too much about the stuff. Spent a fortune on it. Tried it twice on DS at the time. First off the taste is terrible so not easy at all to give a child. That night he was having hallucinations. I heard him in his room talking and when I asked he kept pointing to the window and asking if I see whatever it was he saw. I stopped giving him the meds immediately and let it run it's course. Not a fun illness, but bc of my experience I won't do it again. I do have friends who swear by it. Their son got in on vacation twice and it he was fine after a couple of days.

Thanks! That's what I've been trying to do. I feel bad, but I asked them not to play with each other (share toys) and he's been relegated to the living room to watch TV & play and she is in our play room.

Re: Flu spinoff - Tamiflu
Once when my daughter had the flu she was prescribed Tamiflu. I knew she always refuses all medicine and throws it up but I agreed to get it anyway because I wanted to do everything I could for her. Until I got to the pharmacy and it was over $200 under my insurance! No way I could afford to spend that just so that she could throw it up so she didn't get it. The next day she was much better anyway so in the future I won't even bother trying.

Re: Flu spinoff - Tamiflu
Hope your little guy feels better soon! My DS was tested positive for flu this week too. His pediatrician said he would not prescribe tamiflu for him or for any other family members. He said the only time he prescribes tamiflu is if a parent insists on it. He also said this years vaccination was not showing to prevent the flu so far this season.
My son is resting and drinking lots of liquids. I am giving him elderberry syrup and vit c. tablets and that is what my DH, DD and I are taking too.
I am worried that I am going to get it as he is with me 24/7- sneezing near me..the works...fingers crossed.
This flu season sucks!

I was told by 3 doctors that Tamiflu is not to be used prophylactically. In fact, my pediatrician won't even prescribe it. i would not give it to her unless she was diagnosed with it.

Re: Flu spinoff - Tamiflu
So my daughter ended up coming down with the flu on Friday (had a 102 fever). I gave her the Tamiflu right away and she was feeling better within hours. Completely acting like herself, no cough, body aches, sneezing or anything like my son developed. Her fever has been low grade (99.5ish since Friday) but looking at her you would never even guess she was sick.
So, based on what I saw from my DS and from her, catching it right away and getting the Tamiflu absolutely helped. I caught his probably at the tail end of the 48 hours and it definitely lessened his symptoms. My daughter barely had any. Luckily, neither of them had any side effects so far from the medicine.

Glad to hear your DD is responding well to the Tamiflu - curious did both kids have the same strain of flu when they tested them?

I think so. Both were positive for Influenza B.
