Flu spinoff - Tamiflu
Lo and behold, my son was diagnosed with the flu yesterday. My pediatrician prescribed Tamiflu for him, to reduce severity and length of symptoms, but also to my daughter, as a preventive measure.
I'm already giving it to my son. Would you give it to your other child as well? I'm leaning towards yes. Anything for her not to have to suffer too.
When I called my dr. he said he would not prescribe it unless I had actual symptoms. It seems like there are very differing opinions on this.

No. I don’t think it prevents the flu and it’s really tough on. Their stomachs.

Re: Flu spinoff - Tamiflu
No way. Especially since she doesn't have flu yet. My ped won't even prescribe it with a positive flu test. They refuse to

Flu spinoff - Tamiflu
I would fill it and have it in the house so I could give at the first sign of symptoms.
I would not give it unless/until I saw symptoms.

Re: Flu spinoff - Tamiflu
They did the same thing to me last year.. prescribed a dosage for my husband and DS. My husband took it because he didn’t get the flu shot and we didn’t give it to my DS. I would give only if your child stars having symptoms.
Everyone reacts differently and tamiflu works for us and not as a placebo. I’ve had flu with and without taking it.
Poor thing, Hope he feels better.

Flu spinoff - Tamiflu
I recently saw on the news it isn’t recommended for children, I’m not sure the whole story as it was a clip from news 12, but if there’s any risk over benefit, it may or may not be worth it. Benefits have to outweigh the risk.

Flu spinoff - Tamiflu
My DS was diagnosed with the flu on Monday. I was offered tamiflu as a preventative measure to give to my 4 and 2 year olds also. I went back and forth. Before I could decide my 4 year old started running a fever so I started her on it knowing it had to be the flu. I also gave a dose to my 2 year old who woke with a fever the following morning. I was glad I had the tamiflu on hand bc they haven't been as sick as my son was probably bc they had the tamiflu at the 1st onset of symptoms.
My DH and I are both taking tamiflu to try to prevent it also.

No, I wouldn't. I would however get something homeopathic, like Genexa Flu Fix or Oscillococcinum. I wouldn't even give Tamiflu to my kids if they had the flu.

No, I wouldn’t give my kid Tamiflu if they had the flu, especially not as a preventative measure. Our ped and even the urgent care by me does not prescribe it for children.

No, I'm not even sure I'd give it to my kid who tested positive for the flu.

I guess I can read up on it myself but why is Tamiflu so bad? And I dont mean as a preventive measure but to give to a child who HAS the flu? Just curious that’s all. TIA

There have been some very scary side effects reported more so in children than adults. Things like seizures and very scary hallucinations.

Side effects and it doesn’t always work. I think for some the possibility of only a slight reduction in severity/duration isn’t worth the potential side effects, which I get.
There is some evidence that it reduces the risk of transmission to others which I think is often overlooked.
IMO, it’s no different from any other drug. I would take it if prescribed and I would give it to DD if her ped thought it was appropriate.

The hallucinations are the scary part. I read about a boy trying to jump out a window the other day.
I just want to add to my comment about the "Genexa Flu Fix" medicine. My niece was exposed to someone that was in her home with the flu on Monday (the girl didn't know she had the flu until later that night). By Wednesday my niece had a fever, aches, etc. Went to the doctor, tested neg...but...I think those tests are like the rapid strep, they aren't 100%, and after some research, I found that is true. I know with strep our rapid have always comes out neg, and the lab showed positive. But, she started taking the Flu Fix medicine yesterday morning and today she woke up feeling A LOT better. I bought myself a bottle just in case!

Is that similar to the Oscillococcinum? I heard great things about that too

Yes, very similar! I was comparing the packages at Harmon yesterday. You get a little more bang for your buck with the Genexa...it comes with 60 tablets for like $15. The other stuff was 6 doses. Both have good reviews on Amazon though

No, it won’t prevent anything. I also read that it has to be taken within the first 2 days of symptoms. Since she doesn’t have it, it will be a waste of money, IMO.
I don’t know about the side effects.

My daughter had terrible hallucinations while on tamiflu 2 years ago. She would wake up screaming that there was someone in her room. The walls were moving in the door to her room was moving closer to her. It was pretty scary. For this reason I would never give it to my kids again. my boys did fine on it but seeing the reaction my daughter had to it was scary.

When DD had the flu years ago, we all took it. DS was 4 at the time and she was 18mos and she was SO sick that I was afraid of him getting it too.

I don’t understand Oscillococcinum. It’s basically a sugar pill and they sell it for over $1/pill which is completely outrageous. I can’t believe it actually does anything—though a lot of crunchy people I know swear by it
