T.V shows / Laughter after a tragedy

How do you feel when we as a nation experience a national tragedy such as what happened in Las Vegas this week and the weekly T.V shows address it briefly and then quickly move on to their usual laughter and frivolous stuff?

I don't watch Steve Harvey but I had this channel on right now and this is his first day back after the Vegas events. His shows this week must have been taped. So he addressed it..said him and his partners were donating 1 million dollars etc etc but said the important thing was to move on and that laughter was the best policy etc...it scanned to the audience and people are nodding their heads in agreement and applauding him.

I am sorry but this infuriated me!!! Peoples lives have been torn apart and all you can do is give them less than one minute of airtime. I don't expect him to dedicate his entire show to this but come on....'

I feel part of the reason why nothing will ever change in America is because people just accept it and move on...not my tragedy so on I go..

We are numb and frankly don't seem to give a shit as long as its not in our back yard.

I know I am picking on the S. Harvey show but apart from the today show this morning who are still covering it I haven't seen any other shows. In general though only one person that I bumped into over the past few days has even brought it up.

Rant over. #nothingwilleverchange

And on the flip side you have someone like Jimmy Kimmel address it. Got emotional over it. And people ripped him apart saying youre an entertainer. Stick to entertaining.
I feel they cant win.

ETS: And the coverage is everywhere. I think people like a break from it.

Celine Dion put on show last night and donated all the proceeds to the victims. Im sure it wasn't an easy decision to perform in VEGAS after what happened. But she knew she could do something to help.

On 9/11, I stayed with a coworker/friend and we watched Three's Company before bed just to take a break from the severity of everything.

While I think it's important to know what is going on - I also feel it's important to have a light option to watch as well.

I agree. You can't live and breath stuff like that 24/7. It's not good for you mentally.
And nothing any TV show or coverage says is going to change what happened unfortuneatly

I agree. I thought Kimmel did a great job.

I also remember SNL premiering right after 9/11 happened and they addressed it very somberly at the beginning of the episode and then brought in some laughter in the vein of nothing can keep us down. I thought it was perfect and just what we needed.

I had a similar thought this week. I was surprised to see the news report such minor things as top stories, etc. It almost made me feel as though such horrific things like this are no longer a shock and people are moving on rather quickly as well. Just was the feeling I got and it shocked me too. :(

I feel "the show must go on" I think the purpose of a comedy show is to entertain- news is for news. I hate when I hear stuff like people say " I can't fly since 9/11" to me you can't stop doing what you always did - it is a terrible tragedy but to just stop your life what does that do?
I for one don't watch the news- I am thankful I have very small children we do Disney Jr- I don't want to see snap chats of the crowds during the Vegas shooting, I never watched the footage of the towers falling - I worked close enough I dealt with the smoke and smog that was enough reality for me.

Same thing happened on WWHL with Andy Cohen and I personally agree with him and Steve Harvey. Andy's 30 min show is meant to be humorous, and he said that on such a heavy day, humor may be the best cure of all. Similar to what you said above... People turn on the TV on days like this to take their mind off and have a moment to take a breather from it all. While I am sure things were different off-camera, I think they handled it the right way

Re: T.V shows / Laughter after a tragedy

I wouldn't expect laughter and humor from a news program, be it on network TV or on cable like CNN, MSNBC etc.
But on a talk show like Steve Harvey or even the View, I wouldn't expect the entire show to be about the current serious news story.
The way it was handled as the OP explained, it was mentioned and then the show moved on is fine.

These days we are bombarded by news, be it real or fake, from all sources and devices.
Everyone needs a break once in a while. It's just too intense otherwise.

I can't remember if it was Houston or Irma but I was watching GMA and the opening credits were "Devastation in (Houston)! Homes destroyed! Fatalities! Destruction and chaos! (change music) And our big reveal...who will be the next Bachelor?!?" I will admit that as a huge Bachelor fan I was intrigued but I just felt the timing was so completely off given the seriousness of the lead story.
