Possum in Yard
A few weeks ago I saw what appeared to be some type of animal print in mud on our white fence. I tried to do a quick Google search and it came up as cats or a possum. There are some feral cats in the neighborhood who sometimes come on our property, so I kept a closer eye on my dog when I sent him out but haven't thought of it since.
Tonight while my dog was out I heard him parking like crazy, so I went out to get him and saw him barking right up at a possum. The possum wasn't moving and I quickly got my dog inside.
I'm now petrified to send my dog outside. How do I know when the possum finally moved that he didn't find his way into my side of the yard?
I think I know where he is coming from. The neighbors on the other side of the fence leave all of their garbage outside their kitchen door, which is right near the fence where the possum was.
Any tips? Live trapping is out because I'm too afraid of handling the trap, and because of my dog I'm limited as to what repellants I can put down.

Leave him alone, he will move if you dont bother him. Mean while take your dog for a walk on a leash down your street. Check the yard before you let the dog out.
Not sure why you're asking about a live trap. We are surrounded by all types of animals on LI. Why do you need a repellant? The possum is prob only walking thru the yard.

The possum isn't going to hurt your dog. The possum should be more scared of your dog hurting it.

Possum in Yard
Possums are ugly but great for the environment. They kill bad bugs. Your dog is fine. We have a massive one that loves torturing my dog. He sits at the top of the fence at night and just stares the dog down. He has been around for years. The possum doesn't need to be trapped or removed. Let him go about his business and you do the same.

This. Possums don't come because garbage is around, they come because they live in NY just like we do. I have them in Queens. Keep and eye on your dog and move on with life.

Re: Possum in Yard
I agree with everyone else. They are ugly as sin and I can't stand the site of them- to me they look like an overgrown rat with those nasty tails but they are really harmless unless they are rabid. And you'd know if it was rabid because you'd be seeing it in the daytime and it would be acting off

I was under the impression that possums actually can't have rabies

Re: Possum in Yard
Leave it alone. I have never heard of someone trapping or killing a possum. They come and go and do no harm to you or your dog.
