I guess, as per usual, I fall in the minority. I feel it's important to teach my children that things are ok in limited quantities. I feel that a treat of soda or straight juice or sweets are healthy. Gabriella didn't even like the taste of soda for the longest time and still will only have a sip when we have it. I do not like soda much, personally, and only order it while out at a restaurant or something. We rarely even have soda in our house unless we are having a party or something.

Patrick has soda as well. i try to keep it at caffine free)
I can tell you that juice was the culprit in having his 4 front teeth removed. I am refusing to give my daughters juice.

we don't drink it, so it's not in our house. I don't like to give straight juice either. I guess I'm glad that DS likes water.

It's not so much the teeth that concern me. It's bone density.
I don't need their bones depleted of calcium at such a young age.

I was a major Diet Coke drinker. I'm not kidding when I say my breakfast consisted of one can of Diet Coke. Unfortunately for me, I drank it like that from the time I was a teenager until the time I gave it (a month before we decided to TTC).

I realize the damage I did when I read things like this:
Building and maintaining bone is typically not at the top of the list of concerns for young people, but the bottom line is that peak bone mass is usually reached by the time you are 30 years old. To ensure that your bones reach their maximum density, it is important to maintain a diet that contains the recommended number of servings of calcium-rich foods before age 30, as a gradual loss of bone occurs in both men and women after this age.

Nope, no soda if I can help it. He doesn't even drink juice (he doesn't like it).
He is starting to really like water which I am very happy about.

Re: Let's talk soda.

Both DH and I are HUGE soda drinkers. DH drinks 6-8 cans of Diet Coke a day. I usually have 1, at most 2, cans of a regular soda. So there is no way that we can not have soda in our house. I always tell myself DH's diet soda addiction is better than drinking 8 beers a day!

But in any case, Andrew has yet to ask for soda and he has never even had a sip. He is perfectly content with water, and drinks a lot of it. The sugar content of juice is just as high as a soda, so we limit juice big time. He gets it diluted if I can do it, and he will have a small juice box if we are out. As he gets older, I can see myself letting Andrew have some soda as a treat, I mean, how can I deny my kid something he sees mommy and daddy have all the time? But it will be limited and be caffeine free, and until that day comes, its water or milk for him!

We don't give our kids soda, but that's only because we can control it now. We don't give them chocolate milk either. It's inevitable that they'll have these things someday so as much as we can "control" now, we will.

I've seen BABIES with soda in their bottles. W T F? Chat Icon

Milk with meals in our house. THat is how it was when I was growing up. Then when we got older we could have it with pizza every once and a while.

As for a can of coke just for the heck of it, no way for the kiddos!

While I don't plan to have soda in the house, I wouldn't stop my daughter from drinking it at a party. It can be a fun treat, not a routine beverage.

I never had soda growing up unless it was a birthday/holiday/party. I hardly drink Soda now, and it is rarely to never in my house.

IMO, juice is just as bad as soda, it's still very sugary and just as many calories or more. The only plus to juice is that you can get 100% juice drinks.

Our plan for DD is limited sweets and junk food. DH and I grew up the same way, heck the first time i had taco bell I was 16 years old! Dh mom had them convinced fruit and yogurt were dessert.
DD will only be getting watered down juice, no soda at all until she is wayyy older, and very limited candy, and NO junk food/fast food for a very long time.

I know it will be a battle at functions with all the junk around, we prob will give in a bit, and I know we will hear crap from relatives, but honestly I don't careChat Icon

Re: Let's talk soda.

Molly has not been allowed any soda. I don't offer it to children in my home either. I don't see the need. Similar to the way I never understood 12 year old drinking coffee or Scott's 9 year old nephew with large, iced coffee fancy drinks from Dunkin Donuts...
She has had some chocolate but that is not an everyday thing. At a birthday party the cake is the treat..she doesn't need soda too. (JMO)

She has 1/2 water, 1/2 OJ juice in our house and a mini-size juice box at school with lunch each day. I purchase 100% juice and occasionally Sunny D as a treat..that is watered down. I did give her Yoo-Hoo on the ferry the only day, because I has nothing else with me. But at home that would have been milked-diluted.

NEVER did she have any juice in a bottle. And ONLY water after her teeth are brushed for the night. putting a child to bed with a bottle of milk or juice can rot their teeth. So she can have a sippy cup with some water if she wants something.

Re: Let's talk soda.

I won't offer Jenna soda and she is still to young to ask but as she gets older I won't forbid a sip here and there if she wants some at a party, etc-my motto is always in moderation.
Jenna at age 2 only drinks milk, water, and diluted juices (she has never had juice in a bottle though-just her sippy) but like Donna-Marie, on occasion if we are out she will have an un-diluted juice box here and there and I am fine with it-I just make sure I brush her teeth extra good that nightChat Icon
