I wouldn't unless they heavily discounted the car. No matter if they fix it to look new, it was still basically in an accident.

DH just ran back in and said hang on, until the car is titled, it isn't reported as being in an accident. He said try for a discount, but if not, still take the car. It's not considered a collector car, and it won't diminish in resale value.
It was nice of he dealer to even say something in the first place instead of trying to get it done under your nose.

Of course it was nice, but to sell a car at the sticker price (or whatever price they initially agreed on), then it gets in an accident, they fix it, and to still sell it as a new car at the same price? No way. I don't care if it's a collector car or not, has been titled or not, etc.. I'm surprised how many don't care. If I'm paying $$$$ for a brand new car, I want one that hasn't been in an accident.

From what I read online this is more common than I thought. Most times though you dont even know because they fix it before you see it. Example- if i dont get thr car...the next person wont know they had to fix anything anf im sure they will not be told

....which is super shady in itself. But, knowing the car has been in an accident, and they haven't knocked anything off the price...walking!

Most likely it wasnt in an accident. It was probably damage from transportation. It happens all the time.

And if I went to turn in a lease with "damage from transportation" (as in me transporting it from my driveway to the dealer) or try to trade in my car that had some "damage from transportation" they would penalize me for it.
So I'll take the car, but they better knock something off the price for it- or bye!
Next!

They wouldn't even know it. We have no way of knowing if a vehicle was damaged unless its on a carfax. Transportation damage doesn't get reported to carfax.

In general, if the bodywork is done well and you really cant tell there was a problem and nothing is on the carfax, there is no point in disclosing it because the dealer would never know.

And there is damage allowances for a lease. For my brand its scratches and dents up to a certain size and dollar amount for repair.

This is so not true. Dealers have a paint meter. They can tell using this tool if you had body work done and had any part of the car repainted. Carfax or no carfax.

You can get one of these paint meters and tell yourself if a car had body work done. Dealers have them.

My dh and I need a bigger car due to baby #3 coming. We liked the Traverse but wanted to wait for the 2018s because the body style is changing and they made some changes to the interior as well. There are very few out there still but we found one that I really like. It had an additional add on trim that we have not seen on any of the others yet. We decide to buy. We go to finalize everything today. We are literally 1 paper away from finalizing with the finace guy when the saleman and the manager goes wait we need you to see the car first. There is a dent in the back like someone backed into something and a little chip on the edge of where the back of the car and the lift gate meet. They said that the dent most likely can be fixed by just heating and popping it out. However, the chip will need to be fixed by painting. They said they will call us after it is done and if we still want it we can purchase it. If not - they apologize. They checked if there was another one they could find for us but he said in a 300 mile radius he cant find one.

I am so unsure if I want a brand new truck that I know has had a dent in it and fixed already. I know they will fix it and if we dont buy it someone else will. I read that these type of dents and scratches happen often on dealerships because of how close the cars are, maneuvering around, etc.

Would you still buy the truck if the car is fixed perfectly?

This happens so often you have no idea. We get cars with small damage like that all the time. We send them out and have them fixed and everything is fine. I wouldn't sweat it. Its not uncommon and if they are willing to fix it go for it. I've worked for dealers where they wouldn't even tell you. They would set up a night time delivery so that you wouldn't see it either. Sounds like you're at a good store Chat Icon

The only reason they likely told her is because they were picking up the car after signing the paperwork, right? The customer would wonder where the car was, so there was really no way to be sneaky about it.

They didn't even realize it happened until they were pulling the car up for us to take home. There was no way they could have hid it at this point. I am assuming while someone was moving the car the day before they caused the dent and obviously didn't tell anyone. They are suppose to call us this week after it is finished to check it out. We will see.

As most people on here have pointed out, it happens all the time, not really a big deal at all. I would take the car. It's only an issue because you know, but you can give up this car, go to another dealer, and there is a good chance THAT car will have gotten a dent or scratch in transporting, and you would have no idea. I think most people don't realize this is pretty much a daily occurrence in the car industry.

I work for a dealer and have been working in dealers for nearly 10 years. We've never used a "paint meter" to appraise a car.

Your dealer may be losing money then. Or you just aren't aware and never see them use it. I've had dealers use the tool in front of me when I am negotiating my trade. At least luxury dealers (Mercedes/BMW/Audi) when there is more money on the line regarding trades vs. little 5000-10000$ trade ins.

If your dealer isn't using this, they are fools. If anything there should be disclosure if they are selling a car that had prior body work (and no carfax to indicate it).
