Traveling to resort in Mexico
We went a few weeks ago and an unconscious body found in the pool. This was at a VERY prominent hotel. At first we just suspected the individual, an older gentleman fell ill i.e., stroke But after reading these stories, I can't help but wonder.

Traveling to resort in Mexico
Also, this is one off but our transfer driver almost fell asleep behind the wheel. My DH literally made him stop driving. It was the scariest experience of my life. There are clearly no regulations. He said he had been working for 12 hours and had 8 more to go for the day.... this was Riviera Maya. A transfer company recommended by a US travel agent. Very popular at airport, Lomas Travel.

Re: Traveling to resort in Mexico
My brother got very sick from a five star resort in Mexico a few years ago.He thought it was swine flu because he blacked out and was insanely sick, but now I am not so sure, Based on his experience and what I've been hearing in the news I have chosen to not spend my travel dollars there. I think they have a major image problem there now and it is not getting better.

Re: Traveling to resort in Mexico
I am getting the impression that "5 star" resorts in Mexico are not up to the 5 star resort standards elsewhere. Just the impression I get.

They had something on the news last night about this, people being drugged. I only caught the channel at the end of segment. There were a bunch of people this happened to. I didn't know this was happening to different people.

My brother just came back form a cruise. They stopped in Cozumel. He said it was wonderful, people were friendly and he did no feel unsafe. He had a great time.

Re: Traveling to resort in Mexico
I see you canceled so the point is moot but ultimately we need to remember that Mexico is an enormous country. One's experience depends on location and locations are vast and varied. Some areas are to be avoided while others are probably fine.
That said, it's not my first choice. If we were to do a beach vacation we'd do Florida so I could sneak in a theme park day!

Thank you everyone! I cancelled the trip. I feel bad for my hubby so now I need to start looking for a new place. Its his birthday and we really need a vacation. Even ok going somewhere in the US, just have to think of where!
St Thomas, St John are both so beautiful.
I just came back from two weeks on St. John. DH and I go every year. Easy to day trip to the BVI's by ferry or private charter, you only need a passport.
On St. Thomas, I hear good things about Frenchman's Reef. Not sure about other resorts, we've never stayed on St. Thomas. On St. John, we have a time share at the Westin. Caneel Bay Resort is nice too, a bit pricey. There's also Gallows Pointe in Cruz Bay, central to everything in town.

I'm sure others will say go, and maybe I'm overly paranoid, but my DH and I don't feel comfortable with going to Mexico at all. I know everyone flocks there, and maybe the prices are better for these lavish resorts that you wouldn't be able to afford elsewhere, but I don't feel safe there. Especially not with my DD. There were a lot of travel warnings recently about kidnappings etc. I know that this usually is not in the main tourist areas but traveling to and from the airports scare me, etc.
But again, I tend to be overly cautious. I hated Jamaica and would never go back, because I felt extremely unsafe when I was there outside of the resort. And I didn't like that I had to be locked in a compound with barbed wire fences and armed guards, yes armed guards, by the pool.
DH actually refuses to even consider Mexico for vacations even though they have some really cheap deals. He went once and hated it
Agree with all of this. We just got back from jamaica and I was terrified at the airport and felt really unsafe. I would change your vacations plans if you can. I loved St. Lucia and Aruba when I went

Traveling to resort in Mexico
I actually felt safer in Mexico than I did in any Caribbean countries. I thought St. Lucia was particularly bad.
I know you already canceled, but I would go.

Do you recommend a place?
Marriott Frenchmans reef was a really nice place! A friend stayed at the ritz and loved it as well

I also agree - Mexico is the one place DH and I won't go. And we are not normally overly cautious with stuff like this. . Same here.

Just saw on the news this morning that the State Department issued a travel warning about it. You made the right decision un cancelling. So many better places to go

Re: Traveling to resort in Mexico
So sad. I went to Cancun on spring break 18 years ago with my friends. We had a blast! so much fun and we never felt unsafe. Took the bus to town. Of course, we weren't stupid. always stayed together. Never left our drinks unattended. I remember 3 of us had to pee at the same time and we were doublefisting . we left our other 2 friends holding a million drinks and they were yelling at us they were gonna put them on the bar and watch them and we were like noooo, don't put them down. you must hold them. Ah, the good old days.
Anyhow, I would never go today. Too much corruption. You hear stories of police doing shakedowns on people for money. If the police can't protect you, who will? No thanks. Not worth it.

Dh went there years ago too and he said the police stopped his group and made them each pay them to let them go. The next day the same police officer was their taxi driver! Strange and very scary. He said he won't go back now. And I always said I would never go there. It's just not worth it to me.

Re: Traveling to resort in Mexico
Ive been to Mexico twice but around 20 years ago. It was good but honestly is it really that much better than all the other vacation spots and islands you can go to?! I just dont see why anyone would risk it with all the corruption, kidnappings, drugs, crime....even high end resorts have people dying! Why bother when you can go to so many other places?!
