How did your infants fall asleep?

DD is 11 weeks. To date, she falls asleep either from being nursed, rocked by hand, in a swing or in the stroller/car. So she either needs movement or nursing to fall asleep. She has just started to find her thumb and today she fell asleep on her own in her bouncer by sucking her thumb.

How were your babies? Am I the only one whose infant won't fall asleep on their own after being placed in a bassinet/crib? And if anyone else's baby needed some help falling asleep, when did they become more self sufficient in that area?

Re: How did your infants fall asleep?

He sucks his thumb in the rock and play and falls asleep. Once in a while, we rock him in the rock and play. He never falls asleep while being held - isn't that so strange? I feel like most babies fall asleep while being rocked or carried.

DS 1 only fell asleep while being held and walked back and forth. It was the worst.

My first had it down by 7 or 8 weeks. We did eat, play, sleep and after an hour of wake time (which at least the first half she spent nursing) I sang and rocked her for a few minutes and laid her down with white noise. I did let her use the swing for her first nap of the day just to set us up for a good day.

My second was good as a newborn (thank you nicu) but then she got harder to put down. She was more into nurse, play, nurse, sleep. Before I put her down I would swaddle her to make sure she wasn't really nursing straight to sleep. She needed the swaddle for a very long time too.

Mine always nursed to sleep. There was no "put them down drowsy", they would just scream. None seemed to care much for swaddling.

Mine didn't sleep unless she was moving, either (I didn't bf so I can't speak to that). If she wasn't moving, she wasn't sleeping. Not only was she not sleeping, she was generally screaming. She slept through the night at around 3 months when we moved her to her crib. She has been an excellent sleeper (knock on wood) ever since.

Re: How did your infants fall asleep?

My infant would scream bloody murder for.20 hours straight then doze off for 20 min intervals for the other 4 hours of the day.
This explains why she is an only child

Re: How did your infants fall asleep?

Mine was rocked/nursed to sleep for a long time. We had a brief period from about 4-6 months where I could place her in her crib and she'd sleep, but then she went back to nursing/rocking to sleep. She got a little better about it at about 11 months, but would still put up a fight. Now all of a sudden at 14 months, she actually points to her crib and asks to lay down in it! Chat Icon Sometimes she still needs me to stay in the room, but all I do is sit in the rocker and read my book while she drifts off to sleep. It's magical! Chat Icon

ETA: Sometimes if she's overtired or not feeling great from teething, I have to lay on the floor next to her crib and hold her hand. But even that isn't bad. I usually doze off right along with her. lol!

At 11 weeks, he fell asleep to the bottle or I rocked him to sleep. Now he's 5month old & will still fall asleep while eating but if not, I will just put him in his crib awake.

This

Once I stopped nursing I had to cuddle to sleep. Dd will be three next week, and we still do this

How did your infants fall asleep?

I have a 14 week old and he must either be nursed or rocked to sleep. This was the same for my older 2. Eventually, as they got older, I would nurse a little less, rock a little less and put them down drowsy but not asleep so they would learn to fall asleep on their own. I never had any problems with them sleeping. At this age, I wouldn't worry too much.

This was my twins. We got in the bad habit of rocking them to sleep. Once they fell asleep, we put them down in their cribs. Well the older they got the longer we would have to rock them. Whent they were 14 months old, I was 6 months pregnant with my 3rd and it was taking an hour to rock them to sleep. I was done! We had to do cry it out for 3-4 days which was torture. I wish I had weaned them from rocking earlier. Learned from that mistake with my 3rd. Lol

Re: How did your infants fall asleep?

All my kids have needed some kind of help to go to sleep. Mostly nurse to sleep. They were all pretty dependent on it to relax them enough to doze off. It's like their cue to go to sleep. Although my 3 month old will sometimes fall asleep without nursing first if he's tired enough or if I give him a pacifier. But I noticed he seems more restless, moves around more & wakes up sooner if he wasn't nursed right before going down so then I have to feed him again anyway, so I just do it right before I lay him down.
They all liked motion to fall asleep. I refused to rock them at all. I'm too lazy to be honest & I definitely don't want them getting used to it & then I'd be stuck doing it long term. They'd fall asleep in the car though.
It wasn't until about 11 or 12 months old that my kids were able to put themselves to sleep without any real help. My older 2 are thumb suckers so that's what works for them (they still do it to fall asleep at 2 and almost 4).
