Cross post - District 75/ Kindergarten placement
District 75 people - if we live in Bayside, geographic district 26, and my son is offered a kindergarten spot in Jamaica in district 28 or 24, is that an appropriate placement? Seems ridiculously far away for a minimally verbal kid to be on a bus that long and sent that far out of his home community. Also it was recommended he be an 8:1;1 barrier free school but there's no room in the 8s in barrier free so they want me to take a 12 even though that's not the recommendation. Curious....

Cross post - District 75/ Kindergarten placement
I grew up in district 24- I went to Catholic school but the schools in the area are fine. My sister went to them because she was learning disabled. My parents were very happy.
This was not in Jamaica, this was in Middle Village. I would assume 20-30 minutes on the bus.

Thanks for the feedback! Right now it takes him over an hour on the bus to go to a school that is 20 minutes away. With NYC traffic bayside to jamaica is a trip. But it's good to know the schools are good - thanks!

You can fight this.......but you might get placed even further. IMO i would be more concerned with the ratio over the distance....if he really belongs in an 8 and they are placing him in a 12 thats a huge jump, never mind its not whats written on his IEP. I would consult with an advocate.
Eta: What is his DX? feel free to fm me as i go through this process with parents every year.

Can you PM the school in d28? That will greatly influence my advice.

Re: Cross post - District 75/ Kindergarten placement
My sister went through this every year with my niece
She is non verbal and has epilepsy.
They wanted to put her in a school (they are in middle village) in rockaway. It would be a hour and a half bus ride
She fought and fought. And fought. But she. Got her a spot close r

I don't know how district 75 placements work, but I used to go to Bayside H.S from Jamaica by bus, and it took over an hour.
Also, P.S. 205 on Bell Blvd. shares the school with a district 75 school, I think P.S. 244? Why wouldn't your child be placed there?

ITA. I'd also be more concerned with the ratio.

I'm familiar with that school too on Bell, my cousin works in the District 75 school inside it. Why can't your child be placed there?

i would fight it. I worked in 28, and it's not a district i would want my child in. As a special ed teacher, an 8:1:1 is very different than a 12:1:1, and I would be fighting that too
