Wouldn't your homeowners cover that?

Are you asking about Host Liquor Liability?

I used to sell it to our big clients but I don't do personal insurance. Our clients were rather large and the parties were a bit over the top if you will. But it covered them because they had wait staff and liquor with bartenders serving drinks all night at the house. People came, ate, drank the night way and yep.. you got it.. DROVE home.

So when they go off and kill someone or drive the wrong way down a highway the idea was they'd get sued and the claim would come back to say who in their right mind served them that much liquor and let them drive? Oh that's right Joe and Jane Rich did.

We came into play. Because the rich party HARD

Most of the time they'd cater and pass off the risk to another but sometimes they'd prefer their privacy and that's where things got sticky. Those little intimate parties. I had one who'd do it once a year for the big donors to his charity. It was like 20 couples in his house.

But I never got involved in the personal insurance side or paid much attention to when they partied for fun on the side. Not my problem. LOL We'd pass each other in the hall. Personal lines and commercial lines. They had the big houses, we had the deep pockets. Both of us get paid crap to care about taking care of them and we'd laugh about it. Meh.

it seems to have slightly different names... i believe here in CA, it's called party alcohol liability (PAL).

from what i've read, an "average" policy is about $120.

there are two people in particular who will be invited to SO's surprise 50th. i am aware that both of these individuals are already known to the police for getting behind the wheel after drinking.

not sure which is a "better" option... get the insurance or pay for a taxi for these people. my first thought is pay for a ride and they aren't behind the wheel and who cares about being sued because no one was hurt... better to prevent than to lament. but what if they get angry drunk and don't want to take a ride.

again, about 98% of the guests are cool... i'm just worried about these two.

legally... i am not the homeowner, but i will be the host. not sure how that affects what i should or shouldn't do.

I wouldn't bother. They are adults, no? You can look up social host liability laws by state and California appears very lenient.

For 2 people? I wouldn't. You could just put out a bowl and take keys. Give them back if sober enough to drive.
