What time to leave to get off LI?

I have to be in Saratoga tomorrow afternoon, at 12. It's about a 4 - 4 1/2 hour drive. I would rather leave early enough to avoid morning rush hour (or at least most of it), and get there early. Do you think leaving at 6:30 - 7:00 would work? If not, what time would be good?

Thanks

Re: What time to leave to get off LI?

In my experience you need to be over the bridge by 6 am to avoid the real hot mess of traffic. (this applies to ANY bridge you are using to get off of LI)
I am not sure where you are coming from on LI but for me, that means leaving my house at 5 am to be at and over whatever bridge I am taking by 6 am

The time you want to leave is really the height of rush hour

I agree but if you are taking the Throgs Neck or Whitestone and not really heading into the city per se, if you leave at 6 you will probably be okay (so long as it is nice weather). I live in western Suffolk and was able to be over the Throgs Neck by 6:30 when I left at 6 a few weeks ago.

Agreed.

I'm in western Suffolk (on the Nassau boarder) and I'd probably leave at 530am just to be safe.

Thanks - I'm coming from Commack and will be taking the Throgs Neck or Whitestone. So, I guess I'll leave by about 6 Chat Icon

Re: What time to leave to get off LI?

Lately it's been taking me 45 min to get to and from work and that is about 12 miles.
So I'm jaded.

Depending on where you live.

I leave at 5-5:15 and can hit the city by 7am.

I suggest leaving your house no later than 5am to get out of the rush hour traffic on the cross Island/Throgs/BRP/GWB etc. You want to out of long Island by 7am.

ETA: I live in kings park.

I would leave early - there is also traffic in the Bronx and Westchester in the mornings as well.

I would leave by 6 at the latest.

Definitely use Waze if you don't already. At that time of day, it will be VERY important cause you might also want to avoid the Tappan Zee and take the Taconic. Distance wise, it is a little longer, but there will be a lot less traffic.

I live near Saratoga. It takes between 3.25-4 hours to get to Western Nassau from my house.

If you get here early, the downtown area of Saratoga is very nice. There is also the state park which is nice to walk through.

I work in Saratoga. I live near Schenectady. It takes between 3.25-4 hours to get to Levittown from my house.

Thanks for the info. I have been up there before (many years ago) and hope to have a little time to walk around downtown. But, I hate driving on the Taconic - I'd rather deal with a little more traffic than take that road Chat Icon . Does waze let you tell it to avoid certain roads?

No - but it provides alternate routes.

You can also take the Hutch to 684 to 84 and take the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge to the Thruway. I now live north of the Tappan Zee so when we go upstate that's our bridge. When my brother goes upstate he too takes the Taconic but I hate that road- too windy and dangerous through a lot of Westchester. 684 is nice and wide and should be an easy ride as most traffic will be heading south towards White Plains.

I have also done this way as well.

We usually don't get on the Taconic until Duchess County - I hate it in Westchester as well!!!

You should leave now.
Just kidding (sort of but not really).

Seriously if you NEED to be there by 12 and you live in Commack, 6am is the latest you should leave.

I actually did think about going up tonight, but that just wasn't realistic. If the worst happens and I'm a little late, it won't be the end of the world, but not what I'm looking to do, either. I'm planning on leaving by 6.
