You know what's funny? The wet and clear KIDS gets a 7 but the regular wet and clear gets a 4.
I am guessing because the kids is a higher SPF?
I will just buy the regular one for her. She has my husband's Italian skin so she doesn't really burn like I do- she gets golden.
I noticed that. The Sport spray in 30 also gets a 7 but the 15 doesn't which is also weird!
I am guessing the higher the SPF, the more chemicals are needed so that may be why

I use California baby or Blue Lizzard. I have flexible spending through my job and these are approved items with FSA. I shop on FSAstore.com and I always have coupons.

I've been obsessing over this for 2 days
I was hoping for something we'd all just use but wound up ordering a few. Got Babyganics 50 lotion and stick (EWG 2 & 1), and Coppertone 30 lotion and spray (EWG 3 & 4). I know the spray isn't the best but it's the most practical for reapplication. Nailing my kids down at the beach to reapply lotion multiple times all day will never happen. Plus if we missed a spot with the lotion I feel like the spray covers it. I figure it's the lesser of two evils relative to burning...
I would get a higher SPF than 30. We are olive skinned and tan easily with 50 on, but 30 definitely allows enough sun to make my kids burn. I would reapply it every 30 minutes if you are going with 30 to be honest.

Because I have been obsessing about this , I read that SPF 50 protects against 98 percent of UVB rays, but SPF 30 protects against 97 percent of them. The top EWG sunscreens for kids are mostly 30 and I think it's because as Nell said higher the SPF the more chemicals (that's partly why it's not recommended to use SPF over 50.)
The only time my kids have ever burned is in Florida or the Caribbean because the sun is so strong. We'll be in Turks and Caicos in a couple of weeks and all of us will use the 50 and I'll be nuts about reapplying.
At the beach in NY, they're always fine with 30 lotion and then a few sprays throughout the day (same with me.) I try to reapply as much as I can but they're always off somewhere and I'd be hunting them down with a can of sunscreen all day.

Yeah I've read that too, but it doesn't work nearly as good as a higher SPF for us. I know a lot of the "natural" sunblocks only come in 30, and I'm reading reports every single Summer of fried babies and kids.

This is why I like the Coppertone Water Babies Pure and Simple. It's SPF 50 and only a 3 rating on EWG. I can live with a 3 rating. All that other stuff, that is sooo natural, I just dont' trust it. DD has olive complexion and even with the 50 on she gets darker- which means she's getting sun through it. It's a pain to have to put on a lotion but I do feel it works well.

My side of the family and 2/3 kids burn. We are all fair (but lucky one of my DD got a tanning gene). We use the copper tone waterbabies pure and simple. The more "natural" stuff will still result in burns for us.
The Pure and Simple actually gets a decent EWG rating too. I think it's a 3. Imo the suns rays are more of a risk than any chemicals in the sunscreen.i like that this one really works...and its not a terrible rating either.
As a cancer researcher, I put far more stock into protecting DD from the sun than paying one ounce of attention to what the EWG has to say about anything.

I feel the same. I also feel.the same about these "natural" bug sprays. Mosquito and tick borne illnesses are much more of a risk than some Deet

But aren't there studies being conducted now that are showing that the chemicals in sunscreen may actually be more harmful than the suns rays? Pointing to the importance of natural sunscreens and reapplication.

As far as we know, the benefits of adequate sun protection far, FAR outweigh the potential risk of oxybenzone use. The American Academy of Dermatology supports this. I've seen several young adults with their whole lives ahead of them lose excruciating battles with melanoma.
As a parent you need to do what you feel comfortable with. I do use more natural sunscreen on my DD but if at any point I feel it isn't working she'll be getting slathered in oxybenzone without hesitation.

Re: Can we discuss suncreen?
The first few years i stressed over this but this morning i just used Neutrogena sport on DD's arms because it was on the counter and i wanted to be sure she had something on her when she left the house. Also they are older and active now and the other "safer" ones aren't as easy to put on and id worry about dripping in her face with sweat and stuff.
I do use and like the coppertone pure and simple others have recommended.
My main thing these days is avoiding a sunburn and it not being a chore. It also needs to be something DD can reapply herself at summer camp.

Re: Can we discuss suncreen?
So, my daughter, who turns bright red when zinc oxide touches her, was fine with California baby (titanium oxide; no zinc oxide) last year. I put it on her Friday, and Lo and behold, her skin turned bright red again. I picked up the coppertone baby free & simple (or pure or whatever; can't remember the name), and surprisingly she was fine with it. I thought the physical sunscreen would be so much better given her delicate skin, but I was wrong...

The Pure and Simple has zinc oxide in it so that's surprisingly that it didn't effect her!

It's so funny you mentioned that because I just noticed that! I somehow missed it in the store but just saw it when I looked at the bottle for the name! Wonder if it was something else in those other ones that bothered her, and I chalked it up to zinc oxide given her sensitivity to all the stuff I tried on her when she'd get diaper rashes.
