Can we discuss suncreen?

What kind of sunscreen do you use?
Do you use spray or lotion?
Do you buy separate sunscreens for baby, bigger kids, and adults or does the whole family use the same one?
If you use regular sunscreen on kids, at what age did you make the switch?

ETA: I am researching the top rated organic ones on the EWG site and while I would love to solely buy those, we belong to a beach club and go through an insane amount of sunscreen every summer. Trying to come up with the safest but most reasonable solution!

Re: Can we discuss suncreen?

DD will be 7 this summer and I still plan to use the Coppertone Water Babies Pure and Simple. I like it because it's zinc based so I can see where it's going and if i missed a spot. It does rub in, but goes on pretty white at first.

I use spray sunscreen on myself. It's so much easier. I just buy the target brand or whatever is on sale.

In a pinch I will spray her with it- but I try to avoid sprays on her because of the fumes etc.

We all use Think Baby. It's rated a 1 on ewg I believe, rubs in well for something natural, no burns despite that we are all very fare. I buy on Amazon through subscribe and save which makes it pretty reasonable.

This exactly. Sometimes I use the Coppertone stick for their face or even on their scalp. My boys are going to be 8 and 6 soon. I use the Waterbabies Pure and simple on myself as well sometimes too.

Yes forgot to add that for her face I like the Neutrogena Baby stick. It's all zinc

I also use the ewg website when buying sunscreen, hair products, lotions etc.

I use thinksport which is pretty similar the the PP. I used it all last year on myself, my husband and my 3 kids who were 1, 4, and 6 at the time. It smells great and worked well. I also used badger last year but that stuff is sooo thick and hard to rub in...it became too frustrating.

I buy thinksport on amazon.

Thinkbaby. I should invest in a stick for her face.

Re: Can we discuss suncreen?

I use alba mineral sunblock or badger (for kids or regular) on both of us. The alba one is a far better consistency but I think badger is more organic. Both have worked very well for us and we are all fair.

ETA- I started using "regular" meaning not kids sunscreen on my DS last summer (he turned 3 in August). It was really a matter of convenience. I happened to have whatever it was on me at the time so I said eh the heck with it lol.

Can we discuss suncreen?

I use the EWG ratings to choose sunscreen for my family. I mostly buy products that my dd and I can share- I use Babo or adorable baby lotion and babyganics sunscreen stick for my three year old dd daily from April- September because she is very, very fair.
In general I look for a mineral based sunscreen without vitamin A. I do not use any products with avobenzone or oxybenzone--I get an allergic reaction from both chemicals.
I try to buy sunscreen at buy buy baby or bed bath and beyond because you can use coupons. Last summer it worked at to be the best prices.

It's been years since I looked into this, but I think the site I found a lot of info on was called safemama. I use badger baby and usually get it at buybuybaby.

My side of the family and 2/3 kids burn. We are all fair (but lucky one of my DD got a tanning gene).
We use the copper tone waterbabies pure and simple. The more "natural" stuff will still result in burns for us.

The Pure and Simple actually gets a decent EWG rating too. I think it's a 3.
Imo the suns rays are more of a risk than any chemicals in the sunscreen.i like that this one really works...and its not a terrible rating either.

ETA- the original Waterbabies- the one that does NOT say pure and simple- is a much worse rating. I only buy the Pure and Simple. It's deceiving too because the bottles look exactly the same. You have to really watch for the words Pure and Simple when buying it

I've always used Coppertone Water Babies Pure and Simple for my kids. I use the lotion, not a fan of the sprays.

ETA - My kids are 8 and 4, I even use the Coppertone Water Babies on myself so no plans to change the brand anytime soon.

Re: Can we discuss suncreen?

My dd1 breaks out from everything. Last year we were successful with California baby for her but it costs a fortune. I'm going to try thinkbaby because it gets good reviews and see how it goes. I think she may have a sensitivity to zinc oxide (she broke out from diaper rash products with this when she was a baby)- in which case California baby is the only physical sunscreen that doesn't have zinc oxide. Due to the cost, the rest of the family (including dd2) use something else. Last year it happened to be babyganics. Whatever gets a decent rating on ewg that I can find a special on.

It's not organic, but I just bought
Skin so Soft bug guard + SPF30.
After reading the post about the ticks this season I wanted something with more protection.

We are boaters so I usually make the investment in California Baby. I just bought Badger Baby to give a try.

For us, we use whatever I grab that is on sale.

I've been obsessing over this for 2 days Chat Icon

I was hoping for something we'd all just use but wound up ordering a few. Got Babyganics 50 lotion and stick (EWG 2 & 1), and Coppertone 30 lotion and spray (EWG 3 & 4). I know the spray isn't the best but it's the most practical for reapplication. Nailing my kids down at the beach to reapply lotion multiple times all day will never happen. Plus if we missed a spot with the lotion I feel like the spray covers it. I figure it's the lesser of two evils relative to burning...

And you're spraying outside so it's well ventilated. It's not like they are inhaling it in an enclosed area.
I kind of feel like getting some spray myself for this year. It's such a mess to reapply when it's all hot and sandy.

Coppertone continuous spray wet & clear 30

I was happy to see a spray with a relatively low rating since most of them are 7s.

ETA: The Coppertone sport high performance 15 spray is a also a 4.

Re: Can we discuss suncreen?

You know what's funny? The wet and clear KIDS gets a 7 but the regular wet and clear gets a 4.

I am guessing because the kids is a higher SPF?

I will just buy the regular one for her. She has my husband's Italian skin so she doesn't really burn like I do- she gets golden.

I suck but I only use target sport spray. It works for me and dd. When she was little I would spray it in my hand and put it on. She now knows to hold her breath. No, it's not organic but she never burns.

I noticed that. The Sport spray in 30 also gets a 7 but the 15 doesn't which is also weird!
