laptop questions

I need a new laptop not looking to spend a lot, nothing fancy, not an apple.
The majority of use is the internet, any suggestions on brands? Also what are the must haves in a laptop?

Thanks.

Re: laptop questions

Lately, I've been leaning towards HP, Acer, and Asus brands.
Computers have gotten so powerful, that for the average user, you can get an "entry level" laptop that has more than enough power for pretty much anything you want to do.

The major fork in the road is whether you want to emphasize screen size, or weight. If you are carrying it around a lot, then weight is the primary factor, which of course means a smaller screen. If screen size is important, then it will weigh less.

I like the SSD (solid state) hard drives, since there are no spinning platters, weigh less, and use less battery power, but they usually cost a bit more.

Many laptops, especially the lighter ones, aren't coming with a DVD/BluRay player. Just be aware of that when shopping. It may not be necessary for many people, but if you plan on playing DVDs or CDs, you'll need to make sure you have a drive.

More RAM is more better. 8GB is the minimum.

Re: laptop questions

Thanks for your input Golden Rod, the laptop for the most part will be on my desk connected to a monitor and wireless keyboard. Occasionally I need to take it with me that is why I want a laptop.

Again mostly for the internet sometimes I need to work on spreadsheets.

The weight is not that big of a factor I would prefer a bigger screen.

What I have now is a Lenovo (sp) and it is slow as molasses which drives me crazy.

When it comes to buying computers I am clueless.

So if you don't mind what would you recommend for let's say under $700?

Thanks!!!

This is Amazon's list of what I suggested, under your budget, with a 15.6" display, and with an Amazon rating of 3 stars or more. Most of the "3 stars" are 3.8 or so, which is why I added them to the list.

Amazon list of suggested laptops

These are just my opinions. There are several other people on here that have just as much knowledge, if not more, than I do, so definitely get other people's input.
